Help needed to identify a deck

Recommended Posts

:hide: Can anyone identify this deck for me? It's a 36" SD and has alloy spindle bearing housings. Model number / approximate year would be useful as would knowing if it will fit on my 1975 C-120 automatic or will it need modifying?

If it will fit them I'm also going to have to get a PTO belt but what length?

Thats an older style 42" side discharge and should be a direct fit for your C-120 with the front mount mule drive as fir the belt I think it's a 102742-or a gates 6378..as far as model I'll guess a 05-42ms01 or 5-1010 :hide:

try this manual I use it alot for parts:

im sure mime from ohio is correct but if you measure the blades and multiply by 3 that will tell if its a 36 or 42,it kinda looks a little smaller in the pic

Hey guys, what you've come up with is very helpful. I bought it as a 36" deck and the blades looked to be about 12" so I haven't actually measured them yet but I will today and let you know. Visually the deck is deceptive and even the guy I bought it from wasn't certain about it being 36".

Armed with your info I've been checking on the Toro site and it pretty much matches the deck that would have been originally sold with the 1975 C-120 auto. If it is a 36" then it appears it may be a 5-0772 (1975) but there are no drawings. it was replaced by the 65-36MS01 (1976) which is very similar to the one I have, the only slight difference seems to be the belt cover. What's great is that it is contemporary with the tractor which is nearly finished now so I'll be moving on to refurbish the deck. :hide:

That is a 42" deck no doubt about it, 42" are not a true 42" cut, but closer to 40" and you can't just measure one blade and multiply by 3 the 36" deck the center blade is smaller, and the 42" SD and RD deck don't use the same blades, best way to check if your not sure is flip the deck over, turn a outer blade so it points straight across, figure out how far from the shell it is, and then turn the blade on the other side straight and measure from there to the point the other blade was at.

I hate trying to type something that is easier said. :hide:

:hide: Measured things today and yes indeed it is a 42" deck but at some point in the past it was fitted with three 12" blades hence the confusion. Judging by the condition of everything underneath this was done a long time ago and well before the deck was finally put to one side with a wrecked centre spindle bearing.

The deck itself is in pretty good shape for its age and worth refurbishing but only one of the bearings is worth keeping (it has obviously been replaced at some point) although it may be best to replace them all. Any advice on the most economical way of setting about this would be very welcome.

3, 12" blades??? that would leave strips of uncut grass, now that is a new way to stripe your lawn.

Post this over in the "Wanted" section of the classifieds so our member Daveoman can see it if he doesn't see it here. He has a lot of good new and used parts for 42" decks at reasonable prices.

I agree with racinfool40, it looks exactly like the 5-1010, which is on a 72 charger 10.
