Modifying the rear hitch.

Recommended Posts

So I took the 854 out this evening to do some chores,

and ran into a bit of a problem!

I recently installed the mower deck:

scots-854-0014-M.jpg

My neighbor across the street told me about some old wood fence pieces he had, that were laying out in the field behind his property, and he said my wife and I could have them! (we are going to use the old round stringers for garden bed edging)..good use for the tractor and cart! :hide: So I hook up the cart..since im going to drive the tractor way out in the back fields, I wanted to raise up the mowing deck, just so it wasnt running along the ground...problem though! When I use the lift lever to raise up the deck, it ALSO raises up the rear hitch! :WRS:

which basically means I cant run the tractor with the deck raised *and* the cart attached..to use the cart, the deck has to be lowered..

not a huge deal really..I just ran the tractor with the mowing deck down, not running, and it was fine..but for future use, I would like to be able to raise the deck *and* use the cart at the same time..here is a photo of the hitch:

So about an hour after putting the tractor back in the garage for the night, im reading new posts here on redsquare, and check out what I see!

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...topic=28096&hl=

Take a look at the rear hitch on Chas' 854..thats exactly what I need! TWO hitches!

one that raises and lowers with the lift lever, and one that doesn't..

Where can I find a hitch like this? would Tractor Supply carry something like that?

and how do I remove the current hitch to slide in that new hinge pin? there is nothing visible to "unscrew"..does it have to be pushed/pressed out?

thanks,

Scot

thats all factory hitches on that tractor, the lower hitch was on most wheelhorses, not sure for your tractor but any that i have came with the standard hitch, you can get that from some members here that part out tractors,i would post in the want adds or some one will chime in,and you have the second hitch all ready,it fits in place of the spacers that are used on the standard hitch

All you needed to do was disconnect the lift cable from the rear hitch. You would have

to tie the hitch up level, just a temporary fix.

There are several hitches on ebay right now with the pin that holds them to the transmission. your pin looks like it was cut. There should be a snap-ring at the end of the pin. if your pin isn't frozen it should come out easily

Yup just add a factory fixed hitch, you will need a longer pin, but i use a farm hitch pin from TSC, I have fixed hitches also,if you need one.

what was cut on mine? not sure what the "cut pin" is that you are referring to..

just temporarily remove this pin and the rear hitch will not be able to be lifted !

thanks! I tried that! but that doesnt work..because the hitch has to be supported by *something*..if I just remove the pin, the hitch sags down to the ground..and because I have a 2-wheel cart, I get this:

cart-drawing-M.gif

the hitch is the only thing holding up the cart..

I think for now I will just rig up a temorary fix:

(awesome artwork huh? :hide: )

scot.

heres a pic of the fixed hitch with its longer pin. the spacers on the longer pin are used if the fixed hitch is mounted by itself ....

CIMG0883.jpg

or you mount them as an assembly, in that case use the longer pin without the spacers.

CIMG0884.jpg

heres what you have now with the shorter pin....

CIMG0882.jpg

hope this clears it up for you abit...

How do you remove the pin to remove the rear hitch?

there are snap rings on either side that you remove. however, removing those rings are usually the least of the issues. The pin is usually seized to the transmission housing or lift hitch its self. if thats the case, i usually find it easiest to just cut the pin between the transmission and the hitch on both sides, remove the hitch and pound the pins out, then carefully pound the pin out of the transmission housing. All you need then is a 3/4 farm hitch pin or a even a bolt with a long enough shaft will work, make sure to grease it or put some never seize on it. hope that helps

Thanks. Snap rings are gone. Pin is frozen. Have penetrating oil on now. Will also try heat, then pound it out.

Use a punch on the pin...If you hit directly on the pin, it will mushroom and you will never get it out!

Keep putting a penetrating fluid on it and let it set.....drive the pin 1 direction, then the other direction, spraying more penetrant on the newly exposed part of the pin. I just removed one a few weeks ago. Mine was already mushroomed, so I had to use an angle grinder to remove the mashed ends. It takes a little time and patients....you don't want to break anything!
