HorseFixer 2,013 #1 Posted May 9, 2011 I started working on a 417A. I noticed alot of play in the steering wheel shaft, mainly in the dash tower. Whats a good way to fix, modify this to tighten it up? A thicker metal back up plate with a bearing? What have you guys done? Thanks ~Duke Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Gene_S 93 #2 Posted May 9, 2011 Duke is the upper bushing just worn out? My 416-8 was the same way and I replaced the upper bushing and fixed the problem. I had to remove the steering wheel and split the upper dash from the lower dash. If you look just behind the battery you'll see the bushing. If you need one I have 4 or 5 extra new ones. Mike: I cant see the pictures from work cause they block them? So I will look when I get home The bearing thing does seem like a heavy duty repair And since I over do things anyways that my be more down my alley! Steve: Im doing okay, been busy around the house, putting in a sprinkler system, yard work, cleaning garage and look to be thinning the WH herd a bit So's I can have more room as The Duke "O" Minium stable is busting at the gills. The stuff that prolly will be going..... I have a RJ55 (3) 58's << 1 restoreable 2 for parts a 551, << W/ a missing Starter a 701 rolling chasis, a 854 << W hacked hood, a 702 << W locked up rear end a RR-832 << (Ole Smokey) but runs good an RR-65 (I think) << The Bathtub . I plan on getting the herd down to a manageable 12 with 10 in the stable and the C120 abd 417A in the garage. Anyways I dont have to tell you for us city dwellers thats enough to store & to keep running! And as far as the pics of the 417 goes, she looks a little better in the 1st picture than she really is. Here is the link. Don: Im gonna take a closer look tonight and see how hard it will be to get that steering wheel off. From reading Mikes thread that might be getting myself in a pickle and me dont like pickles! can whlvr 994 #7 Posted May 10, 2011 just read this post and i got another 414,50 dollar special,coulnt get the wheel off of it either,the thick iron plate cut to fit the shaft in 2 peices works great,si i had to drill a few holes,thats a small price to pay for nice tight steering shaft. I like the bearing Idea but also Like Canada Don's plate stiffening idea also. sorekiwi 761 #9 Posted May 10, 2011 I've never seen a 417, so now I see it's quite different from the 520 setup. Howabout just bolting one of the flanged bearings that Wheel Horse used on the front of the lower steering shaft onto the flange on your dash panel? I have used alot of different bearings in the HVAC industry on blowers and things. I think I will also maybe stiffen that area with a strip of some 1/16" stainless steel. Well I will ck my bearing place if they dont have it will do toro.
