Can anyone identify this horse?

Hey guys I have been lurking around the forum for awhile now but this is my first post.

I have been wanting an early sixties wheel horse to restore into a little garden tractor. I told my friend about it today and he said his dad has one that runs good but needs the starter re built and he will take $125.00 for it. I cant id the year or model though, I looked at alot of pictures with no match. Thought one of you guys might be able to help.

Looks like a 68-69 Commando 8. Under the dash there should be an ID tag that will have a model and serial Number! Does it run? Does it drive? Just off of the picture I'd offer $75!

I agree with the year model, but...

Looks like someone put a Newer steering wheel on it. (Toro Style ?)

Find the ID tag under the dash, copy the model no. I'm going with years 65 to 67 it has the narrow fenders, models it looks like it might be a orig. Kohler powered machine it has the wide front and rear tires, yes some tuckys did but most not, models, 855, 856, 857.

We need to ID this tractor. This is very similar to the tractor that I grew up on and have for a while trying to figure out what it was.

I rememebr it had the black/red decals and the foot stirrups - and in all my reasearch have not been able to figure out what it was.

Its got the wrong steering wheel and dash plate, looks updated, but the tractor is complete and will need some work but its a great buy for $125 so what are you waiting for? GO GET IT!!!! I like short frame tractors. and :thumbs:

I don't think it is an 857...no hood ornament...wrong stickers on the hood. Leaning toward 856.

Nice tractor..the short frame, square hoods are great horses.

Caleb Looks like a nice little project for the money. You should be able to talk him down a little bit if it's not running though. I don't think it's a Commando either. Decals, hood ornament different from mine. I think a bit earlier too. :hide:

Just looked in the pict gallery, your hood decals look like they are of the '70 Charger variety. So maybe it's a bit later than originally thought? Need a model #.

Forget the decals, and the steering wheel, it's a sqaure hood short frame, built from 65 to 69 it has the narrow fenders, so CAN'T be a 68 or 69 (unless fenders changed) has a kohler, has the tires wheel combo they used on the kohler powered tractors, so I will say kohler is probably orig. that leaves 4 tractors, 855, 856, 857, and 867 but it is only a 3 speed (best I can see), so it's not a 867 that leaves the other three, now does the belt guard have the indent for a model no.? if it does, that means it can only be a 65 or 66, in 67 they put the model no. on the side of the hood and the belt guard was flat no indent.

So you are saying that it has been modified? Dash, decals, Steering wheel?

I don't know much about the 60's vintage, but the steering wheel struck me as out of place... I assumed tractors from 60's - 70's had the small hub in the middle and two or three arms to the wheel?.....

That steering wheel reminds me of one on a late 80's - early 90's

looks to have been painted at one time and new decals installed, that style decal started in 1970 and used till 72, the steering wheel is a late 80's or 90's wheel, I never said anything about the dash it looks correct to me, the best you can see it, the seat is also not correct, I would love to see more pictures of this, and know for sure the model no.

It is a 855, and be sure to take a air tank, that left front wheel looks flat(bead broke).

All distinguishing features have been altered/modified to the point of only being able to guess what it is until the ID tag is checked.

I'm with Kelly on the 855/856/857 thoughts, but that's as far as I would go.

Bigger:

The deck looks to be a 32" unit - which shouldn't actually be on that model of tractor with the 8.50 rear tires. (gauge wheels are too close to the rear tires)

They are normally found on the tractors with 6.00 - 12 rear tires. :hide:

My Guess is 857 because 855 and 856 has a diffrent hood decals. Or at least the 856 i bought did? :hide:
