Teddy da Bear 11 #1 Posted May 25, 2008 I just got my 7th wheel horse home. Horse and wife are doing fine. It's a C-100 with 36" deck and 42" snow blower. I am feeling really bad about the deal I made. It is the "anti-climiax" of the deal I made before. I feel like I was the sucker in this deal. Guy was vague on the tractor. Claimed he did not know much about wheel horse...he thought it was a 1975. I tried to get info out of him a couple of times. Not much forthcoming. I asked if it was in running condition.......he said yes. I asked what model it was....he didn't know. He said it was in good condition. He thought it might be 18 or 20 horse power.....sigh.... So I went to see it. Tractor was in pretty good visual condition. Except that the fender pan was almost cracked in half. Good golly.....did they use it for a trampoline? It would not start....would not even click. Then the guy said he never did charge the battery. But he said it would run.....sigh.... Came with a snowblower too. It looked to be in nice shape.....turned freely. Then he told me about the deck. He told me he went all the way down to south bend indiana to the toro dealer and had the deck rebuilt. Well it did look like it had a dealer tag on it. The pulley system was off of it. The lift frame was partially disassembled. But the shell and spindles seem very solid. This is a rebuilt deck? What happened in the meantime? He said it must have been his son.......sigh...... I offered him $400 at first. He said "no". So I said the best I would do was $500. So I ended up paying $500 for a non-running, non-mowing wheel horse that was not the year he told me...and not the horse power he told me. C'mon guys.....what happened??
perry 82 #2 Posted May 26, 2008 i think the other guy made out on that deal. but its a addiction and sometimes we just cant say NO !
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #3 Posted May 26, 2008 I think Perry is correct - it's an addiction and you were powerless to walk away. But, if it's in not too bad shape cosmetically then it might be a good running horse someday. I do think you gave too much, but, then again, it is an addiction.
linen beige 15 #4 Posted May 26, 2008 Look on the bright side. Even if you have to spend another $500 to get it running right, and the deck in shape, where else can you find a mowing machine of WH quality for $1000? And the lesson learned from dealing with someone who had explanations instead of answers is priceless. When going to look at a prospective purchase always take along what should be the right spark plug, a gallon or so of gas, and a hot battery at the minimum. An air tank isn't a bad idea. If the seller isn't keen on letting you fiddle for a minute trying to start it, politely excuse yourself. AND WARN YOUR FRIENDS!
Rollerman 290 #5 Posted May 26, 2008 Mike look at it this way...your last Horse was a runner & very affordable...but with an alternative lifestyle. So your latest came at a higher price & a non runner........ It all works out & hopefully soon will be seeing pics & a "hey I got it running post" from you. :WRS:
DOC in Kentucky 178 #6 Posted May 27, 2008 With this addiction, you gotta take the good with the bad. I think we have all been burned once or twice. But the high you get when you get the "great deal" makes you forget about the bad ones. A true collector turns the lemons into lemonade. If it was easy everyone would be doing it and there wouldn't be any horses to be had - good or bad !!! Doc feeling a little philosophical on this Memorial Day :WRS:

T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #8 Posted May 30, 2008 Mike, It looks pretty nice. You may have paid too much, but that tractor will be a very good project. It's a keeper.
Teddy da Bear 11 #9 Posted June 7, 2008 Mike look at it this way...your last Horse was a runner & very affordable...but with an alternative lifestyle. whtractor/scratchhead.gif So your latest came at a higher price & a non runner........ whtractor/dunno.gif It all works out & hopefully soon will be seeing pics & a "hey I got it running post" from you. whtractor/thumbsup2.gif You were right! She is a runner! I cleaned up the battery.....checked the water levels...charged it.....sucked the dead bees out of the gas tank (don't ask, God only knows) and filled her up with some liquid money. Took a bit to choke the gas through.....but.....she started! And runs pretty respectably. I did have a bit of bad luck on the deck however. I was re-attaching the last bolt to the drive pulley and it broke. Tried to drill it for an easy-out and broke the drill. So had to grind the bolt flat and drill again! Second time it worked. Now have to get a bolt for it from TSC. It is a nice feeling to have another running tractor. And this one seems to have never been touched as far as originality. The wiring is perfect. Even the lights worked! Just have to get a new C series seat pan for it.
mailman 1 #10 Posted June 8, 2008 Sounds like it's not such a sour deal after all! Glad it's looking up! We'll be waiting for pics of course!
Kelly 1,033 #11 Posted June 8, 2008 Glad things worked out, the deal sounds like it's getting better and better Not only does it look good, but it runs now.
HorseFixer 2,013 #12 Posted June 8, 2008 Don't sweat it Mike! I know its easy to say bro, but I have paid a little and I have paid alot. There have been a couple that I have paid a couple "C" NOTE more than I wanted, but it all equals out over the stretch of your collection. Duke
Teddy da Bear 11 #13 Posted June 8, 2008 Mailman....if you look further back in the post you will find that I did post pictures in the tractor picture gallery.
Teddy da Bear 11 #14 Posted June 8, 2008 I just got the deck back together. Took it out for a test cut (even with dull blades). It did real good! I shut the tractor off to take pictures of the black sky coming our way. It would not start after that. Charging system apparently must not be working. That is also the C-120's problem. Here is a picture of the storm approaching. (my front yard) Attached Image (Click thumbnail to expand)
Sparky-(Admin) 23,169 #15 Posted June 8, 2008 Dang!! Thats a scary lookin sky. Hope you did OK as it went thru your area. Mike..............
Teddy da Bear 11 #16 Posted June 8, 2008 Yeah...we did fine. Always looking though.....wondering.....is today the day I get to see a tornado? The ammeter dial hand goes back and forth like "whacky" when the tractor is running. Guess it is a good place to start looking. I will replace it with one of my others on a working tractor and that should tell me about that component.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #17 Posted June 8, 2008 Check your grounds, Mike - especially at the rectifier mounting bolts. Add a dedicated ground wire to it if you have to. The battery voltage feeds the ignition switch through the ammeter, so if it was the problem the engine would cut out, or not even run. Make sure the wires are clean and tight at the ammeter connections too.
Teddy da Bear 11 #18 Posted June 8, 2008 I will check that... I also wondered about the ground for the battery. They have it grounded to the gas tank support. That does not seem right. My other tractors are grounded to the engine mount.
HorseFixer 2,013 #19 Posted June 8, 2008 Here is a picture of the storm approaching. (my front yard) Yep the sky was looking pretty grim here just south/west of you accross town! A lightning bolt took a gals tree down across the street. Nice looking gate you have there at the end of your driveway??? how am I suppose to stop by and have a cup "O" coffee with a rig like that? :D
Teddy da Bear 11 #20 Posted June 8, 2008 Once you pass the thumb print varification pad. You answer the guard in the north tower when he asks "friend or foe". If he lets you in do not back up! Sever tire damage may occur! I can then identify you when the guard in the south tower runs a check on your plates. It's all recorded on the securty cameras for your protection! Who you guys calling paranoid????

Ive relayed this info to my boyz at Cass County Sheriffs Dept Swat Team they chuckled when I told them about the cameras, they said something like good we wont have to bring our own! now that we have your layout you should be easy pickens! I told them you are holding several of my horses ransom and the last word from my Lt. friend was something like "NOT FOR LONG" Duke
Kelly 1,033 #23 Posted June 9, 2008 That's not funny saying you are going to go take someones tractors even if you know the local police
Rollerman 290 #24 Posted June 9, 2008 Mike looks like a pretty nice view across the yard even if it's a ominous looking storm. And I hope you never get to see a tornado that close to your home....I got a good look at one from under an asphalt roller several years ago & didn't like it at all. I'll second TT's recomondation to check your grounds too.
