see pic. this is on my 1054. all i can think it would be is to be used to bring the drive belt to a stop. is this correct? ive only noticed it on a few 1054s. not seen one on any pics of 953s and the later 1054A. cant find any info on it in the manual, either. its just a plunger with some flat steel plate on the inside of the guard through which the drive belt runs. when you push down it contacts the drive belt. is it really necessary? just wondering.......

Hey Martin,

I don't have the plunger you've got. My belt cover doesn't even have the top hole for the plunger that you've got.

I do have a welded L-shaped bracked on the inside of the cover that acts as a guide for the hydraulic pump belt. The hydro belt is routed under the bracket.

They are in almost the identical location- it seems like your plunger and my welded in bracket would serve the same function. My guess would be that they replaced the plunger assembly with a one piece welded in bracket to save parts count/complexity/cost. Or possibly there were issues with the welded in bracket shredding the belt and they went to your spring loaded plunger design to provide a more gentle guide for the belt. There must be a way to check the serial numbers on our two tractors to find out which one was built first- anyone know the easiest way to date two 1054's?

If you look my first picture, there is a bracket on my cover that I haven't seen on any other 1054/1054A/953. It is about 3 inches forwared of the hydraulic pump sticker, on the outside on the belt cover. It is L shaped with a hole in it. I think it was used somehow to clutch a snowblower attachment in and out from the PTO, but my tractor doesn't have the bell-shaped PTO and lever assembly. I would like to find out exactly what it worked with and how it worked.

heres some pics of the back of mine. the funny looking knob on the top in my first post is actually a broken ball knob (similar to the hydro control in the same pic, or a touch smaller than the gear shift knob) it broke off the rest of the way and left the insert on the plunger. the bracket that the plunger passes thru looks like its been welded on post factory, whether it broke and was fixed or somebody installed after, im not sure. the belt runs thru it (in the gap in the first pic) between the bracket youve got and the plunger above. there is a spring that goes between the cover and knob to keep the plunger off the top of the belt. maybe it just brings the belt to a stop and thats it.

i havent messed with this cover yet, not sure whether to take it off and fill the hole in the cover or leave it there and get a good knob for it.

The 953/1054's especially can be real picky about the adjustment of the tabs the ride the belt to help stop & hold it for shifting.

Your belt guard was modified at some point with that belt brake....."pretty clever really".

Does your 1054 grind when shifting into gear without useing the brake?

no it doesnt grind. some times ive gotta move the clutch just a little to get it into 3rd, but it doesnt grind. when you move the gear shift into gear sometimes its a little "tight', so lifting up a little and then down again on the clutch helps it. the belt is disengaging fine, stops almost straight away. who knows maybe it was a problem in the past.
