Jim Hudson 0 #1 Posted April 23, 2011 I have the spindle with no key on either end and have trouble with the pulley slipping on the shaft. Seems just the clamping action from the pulley bolt and blade bolt is what keeps it all tight. Have replaced center pulley and shaft 2 times. Anyone have this problem and what was the fix. Seems tightening both bolts before each use and lock tight is only option. Why did they not use a key?? Any comment appreciated.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,518 #2 Posted April 24, 2011 Looked at 2 manuals and the top and bottom bolts are the same part number. The operator manual says to torque the blade bolt 102-170 foot pounds so you should be able to do the top one the same. The natural rotation of the pulley should keep the bolt tight. See the top bolt washer is listed as special. Garry

Just slipped the 3rd center pulley on it's spindle but caught it in time to make some punch marks on the spindle shaft and inside the pulley and drive it back on. Used a good top special washed from a old 724Z parts mower. I have ordered every piece for the center pulley, shaft, spacer's and bearings. for next time. I have always used a air wrench to tighten blades while holding the top bolt then using the air wrench on the top while holding the bottom bolt. I'm going to torque this time to 170 lbs. Its the 60 inch deck used on other mowers. Why don't I ever see anyone else having problems with this deck? Looks like someone should have designed it with a key. Can anyone give me a suggestion to try as the spindle parts are very high.
