Hi I'm new here and i have a C175 Hydro that appears to be leaking oil out the front head gasket  ??? My understanding is that the head gasket is just used to seal for compression. can somebody please shed some light on the subject? i'll try and get some pics.

THe oil that is used to lube the cyclinder wall or the valves can leak into the cumbustion chamber through worn valve seals or worn rings. Does this engine smoke any? Either on start up or under load or all the time?

If you have a torque wrench check the head bolts....should be 15-20 ft lbs. Only one or both heads leaking??

As mentioned as the engine wears with age more and more oil finds its way into the combustion area and is not burned but might leak out past the head gasket. Gases and other struff are also leaking but you don't see it.

Is it a series 1 or series 2 engine? (series II would have a spec number 24300 or greater).

I would maybe say just to replace the head gaskets but be warned it may smoke more after the gasket replacement. make sure the oil level is good not over filled

As it is a series 1 motor I might suggest that he keep it slightly over full (maybe a 1/4 inch above the full mark). The series one have a bad rep based on their inadequate oiling system. Several people have recommended some amount of over filling to avoid starvation on hills. I am personally using a series 1 in my C175 that originally was in my brothers JD 317 for over 2000 hours. He always put in 2 qts of oil instead of the 1.5 specified.

I any event at least keep it at the full mark at all times.

A little oil leak from the head gasket is preferable to throwing a rod as these motors are all too prone to doing....

If you replace the head gasket check the head for warping while you have it off. Lay it on an absolutely flat surface, a piece of window glass or maybe your table saw. Then try to slip feeler gage (Or piece of paper) under it from several points.

if it is warped they are readily available on Ebay...there are alot of blown KT17s out there, so the heads which usually survive are (or should be) cheap
