Personal opinion.... Stop leak is always a no-no. But I have no personal experience with using it in a hydro tranny.

Personally, I would either live with the leak or fix it properly, I wouldn't risk putting stop leak in a hydro. I don't have exprience with this either, but to me it wouldn't be worth the risk.

:WRS: Sorry, that does not fix the leak, it only delays it. The RTV will soon wear away from the rotating shaft, and now you have a leaking seal, and an RTV mess to clean up.

No wonder nobody trusts used car dealers.

Being an ASE certified Master Technician, I take offense to people doing a rig job like that. People like that give the rest of us a bad name, and we get stuck trying to overcome your reputation.

Sorry, had to vent about that one !

 :WRS: i think stop leack an rtv fix are in the same category temp fix.

and it does work ive got cars thru maryland state insepcions that way, i mean i dont think i should r@r oil pan an wutever else give the custmour a 3500$ bill like you master techs do , on a car with 150k miles on it,, sorry i needed to vent . but i agree with you to a point i think it depends on the custmour an how much they want to spend an value of the car . rtv cleans up purdy easy i use , permatex GASKET REMOVER

I say clean the trans off, and run it to find your leak, and change the seal I just resealed a hydro trans, the hardest part was pulling the hubs, I'm with Eldon do it right, don't make a mess you will have to deal with later.

Once again, I find that I should have been more clear. I don't use stop-leak, either. Maybe if I was in the middle of the desert and there was no other way home.

As for giving the customer what they want, I have enough pride in my work not to put my name on a patch job like that. It will always come back to bite you.

Customer, talking to their friend: I took my car to so & so 2 weeks ago, and they repaired the leak. Now it's leaking again.

They always forget to mention details, like they wanted it done cheap, and now your name is associated with not being able to fix it. Thanks but no thanks, I'll pass.

A very wise man taught me long ago, "Do it right, or don't do it."

Don't take this as a slam, merely making a point. Your surprise shows that you knew it was not the "right " way to remedy the problem. Reminds me of the Andy Griffith episode where the "mechanic" put sawdust in the rear end of a car to quiet it down, then sold it to Aunt Bea.

Eldon pretty much took the words right from my mouth in his vent. But I also understand your side of doing what the customer wants when they may not want to spend a fortune on a machine that really is not worth it. I remember an auto body instructor telling our class that if a customer comes in and says he wants you to "just sand it down a little and paint it." then just sand it down a little and paint it. (These are the guys that replace dad's rusty 'Horse with new MTDs.) Just make sure you have some examples of high quality work out there to counter the negative feedback that cheap job is going to generate. In other words, Don't brush paint a new Mercedes, and don't gold plate a Chevette. That train of thought has it's place in the auto repair feild, given the amount of labor needed to remove all the parts that are in the way, but these smaller machines don't require much in the way of disassembly to get at the affected parts, therefore the excess labor is not really an issue. And doing it right the first time means you won't have the extra expense of re-doing it in a short number of running hours. And remember your audience, the folks on here are into PRESERVING our 'Horses, not just getting them through one more day.

i am all for preserving my horse guess what i ment to say, was if you dont have the money or the time to FIX IT THE RITE WAY rtv will get him thru a mowing season or until he can afford or has the time to do it right. I would love to have my c-81 pristine for the show next month but do not have the means, you wont find rtv on it but you wont see a show stopper ither for me i tinker with the horse;s in my spare time an when ever i have spare money i get them parts but with gas being $4.00 a gallon i think everyone can appericate cheap tricks ,, just my two cents
