i dint think a 312 would have the big axles?

im not very impressed with todays haul.the 2 312 8 speeds for $150 .i spare wheel and one rusted deck.its all pretty rough but they are both suppose to run.he bought one for the deck and the people he got it from said it started sputtering so they started tearing wires apart and couldnt get it running anymore.the other one(the one on the back) he said he stopped using when the engine started using oil.anyway on to my questions.first of all i was suprised one has tail lights, one has reflectors i figured they would have been the same?now heres the big ones.one has 1 inch axles one has 1 1/8 axles.i thought that was strange, shouldnt they both be the same?im considering taking the transaxle out of the one with the big axles and putting it under my C100 or at least keeping it for a spare.is it a bolt in or are they different?besides the axle shafts being bigger is there any other interal differences in the rearends? either one stronger inside or have limited slip?i was considering keeping one of these as a back up mower but my C100 looks new compared to these so i will keep a few things i need from them and probably ebey em.ok lets see if i can make the pictures load.

Did you get a picture of the axle with 1-1/8" spindles? The only tractors I know of with the large spindles would be the C-195 and 520H with swpet axle. Some of the Ds I assume also but dont know the years or models on those. The only other thing I can think of for a 312 would be the heavy spindle kit and that still had a 1" spindle.

sorry for the confusion Nick,i meant the back axle shafts, the ones on the transaxle.i know some of the older wheel horses had 1 1/8 rear axle shafts and most had 1 inch but i didnt know any of the newer ones,at least below the 520 (i could seem those have the heavy duty 1 1/8 inch rear axle shafts) had the bigger axle shafts and i find it really strange the they are both 312 8 speeds and one has 1 inch the other has 1 1/8 rear axle shafts.now im curious.jim

Some of the 300 series came with 1 and 1/8th axles (315-8, and I THINK all of the 400 series, and of course, all of the Eaton automatics), but I didn't think a 312 ever came with them. You may want to check the numbers under the seat. Someone may have just switched hoods on it...

Of course, I could be wrong. Then again, as an answer to your question, the trannies bolt up the same way from one tractor to another. Most of the 8 speeds even have all the same part numbers on the inside, with the exception of the axles, differentials, and associated bearings.

It's certainly possible someone swapped trannies on it.

A quick check of the numbers, compared to say a 310-8 (part number 21-10k804 as an example) on the Toro parts viewer will confirm all of it for you.

Good luck!

Kevin

I have no idea why I thought spindle when you said axle. :D For that matter spindles are 1" and 3/4 so I must have just been looking at the screen to long tonight.

Like Kevin said different models and years did have the 1-1/8 axles. Maybe someone like TT or Bill will be along and give you some more info also. They used the heavy 1-1/8 axle transmission on some strange models to. The B-60 only had a rope start 7hp engine but it had the big 1-1/8 axles. :WRS:

My 312 has 1.125" axles too, they must have put them on for a couple years or something.

Crazy how people just let those things rot like that. Good thing that we're around to restore them. They'll take some work but certainly will look good with a little paint.

yea it really is crazy how rough and tough people treat good equitment.these have been beat and banged, back yard engineered, used rough and left outside to rot.im still confused about these tractors both 312 8's but one has an hour meter, tail lights and the little row of red lights on the dash.the other one doesnt.the one with the extras has the big axle shafts.the other one doesnt.i dont know if it was different years or different options or?as for the i d tags,i found one.the other appears to be MIA.i have decided to keep the one with the extras and bigger axles.the other one i will put on ebay as a package deal with a snow plow and the deck that needs repair.if it doesnt sell that way i will be parting it out.jim
