jspain 0 #1 Posted April 1, 2011 This is somewhat of a continuation of the thread "the haul for us" by dpm2000bolt. Curiosity got the best of me and I drove to have a look at a C-160 today and I would like to get the opinions of those more knowledgeable than I am about the approximate value. I know that it is hard to put a price on a unit that you haven't seen, but I'll do my best to describe it: no deck, no rust, paint faded as to be expected, no dings or bent sheet metal, no muffler just straight pipe from block. Tires look to be original and very heavily weather cracked, no tears in seat vinyl, a lot of free play in steering caused by wear in pinion and sector gears, slight leak at seal on left rear axle, heavy oil film on carb side of engine even coating frame and front axle/pivot below. My guess--coming from fuel pump gasket and/or pan gasket--looks a little too much to be normal breather blow by. New starter and solenoid switch. Engine starts and runs great-no smoke and I think that I could count the rpms of that 16 hp K series at idle-sweet. Shifted into all gears and hi/lo fine, breaks work, all shift knobs and dash controls intact. PTO seemed to be ok, but hard to tell without deck. rear light lens' missing. Asking $450 and I offered $300--turned down. I stopped there as I did not want to proceed without knowing if parts especially steering were still available. Thanks, John
Retired Wrencher 5,764 #2 Posted April 1, 2011  What is the intent of this tractor work or Show. I do know that 16`s are getting harder to find these days so if engine runs good and transmission is good I would go up $50.00 because it is a 16 K Kholer. let us know what u want to do with this tractor and we can go from there. rmaynard 16,289 #3 Posted April 1, 2011 Counter with another offer. The oil is probably from either a bad breather gasket or fuel pump gasket. There is also a gasket under the timing gear cover. The engine should never idle so slow that you can "count the RPM's". 1100 to 1200 RPM's is the minimum speed that the engine should idle so that the oil slinger can lubricate the engine properly. The slop in the steering can probably be corrected with a few shims. New parts are not available, but a lot of good used ones are. Leaking seals are not a problem as long as you don't have up and down movement in the axle, indicating bad bearings. If that C-160 were available in my area, I would be tempted to buy it myself. I would go with cash in hand. Money talks. Good luck.
Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted April 1, 2011 A good runing 16hp Kohler with no smoke around me sells for $300+ a straight rolling tractor with little to no rust, $50-100 so he's about right at $450 I'd offer $350 with the cash in your hand so he can see it.
Jim_M 179 #5 Posted April 1, 2011 I have NOS steering gears and shafts for that tractor.
jspain 0 #6 Posted April 1, 2011 Tractor will be used primarily for pulling my yard cart and chipper, mower deck not essential, but never hurts to have a backup. I also will use it to move my Trail Manor hard sided popup camper from the storage shed to the driveway about six times a year and I know that the 160 and the 312-8 that I purchased last week will both do those two jobs fine. But if I could get a good deal on another unit I wouldn't mind picking that up also. Didn't want to make a purchase that I would regret. Thanks everyone for the input. I may call seller tomorrow and up the offer--you never know. John
Shuboxlover 480 #7 Posted April 1, 2011 I got lucky and bought mine (and auto) for for $200 with a deck, but I would have easily paid twice that. With the way you are describing it..Kelly hit the nail on the head. The guy definitely isn't out of line, but if you can talk him down 50 or 100, good for you. But even at the asking price you would be doing o.k..
