I live here in Va and I planted some Fall Turnips and they growed down like a

carrot never got over 2 inches long and 1 inch in diameter.

Any Thoughts?

Very difficult to comment really, to many variables, weather, soil type...you sure it didn't say Radish on the packet :D One thing you find out in the garden, if you get a failure..try a different variety :wh:

Never raised a turnip in my life but for some reason potash comes to mind. Assuming there was some correct tillage involved My guess would be your lacking a trace mineral(Boron for example). A internet search of turnip maladies and soil requirements coupled with a soil analysis should give you your answer pretty quick though.

Work in some Horse Apples  .I never planted winter turnips, but I plant them in the spring and they get good size to them. 1 thing to remember, "if the edible part grows underground no nitrogen"! The plant will be 4 feet tall and no fruit. For Radishes, Carrots, Rutebegas, Kolorabi and Turnips, I put a couple of ice cream pail fulls in a 70' row and work em in deep and well. It seems to work for me. Good Luck
