Deck Spindle identifying....

OK. So, I have decided to build a spare deck with all the parts I have. Over the years, I have had gotten several decks and threw them up in storage. One solid, the others holes and bad repairs done. Well, I have several spare spindles and have noticed some differences. These spindles are probably 78-84 models seeing how that is the span of all my tractors. Here is what I found and would like to know what the differences mean...

I have no VIN numbers from anything so all these spindles are basically orphans!

...One spindle has a 2-1/4" flat nut on the bottom between the blade and blade nut. Does that come off and what years where those, first I have seen. I have 3 of those. Of course, the rest have the standard 1-1/8" nut I am use to.

...One spindle has a 5/8" shaft, all the others are 3/4", possibly a replacement by someone else before me but what years was that size?

...Some have keys on the top, some don't...but I think I will have enough parts to build 3 good spindles.

...Some have a rubber "O" ring around the shaft at the top and some don't.

I have a 42" RD complete deck that has alot of holes and cracks, so there are some more parts, will they all work on the 48" SD deck?

Well, got them all stripped down, should be able to build 5 or 6 good spindles although they are all not the same as far as parts...found vise marks on the shaft of one of them, one with the large flat nut near the bottom. The shaft near the nut's center looks worn, like the cup was spinning on it but that cup is thin metal so it might of been a patch job on the shaft...

I have also dabbled in trying to fix up these old decks with all sorts of parts from donor decks.. And with good success so far all I do is try to match spindles up so there is 3 of the same as for spindles I use this manual quit a bit just making sure part #'s match up!!

covers newer style 36-42-48" decks.. But you can swap out the cast aluminum housings for the coast iron spindles also..hope it helps!!! but 36" spindles don't work on 42-48 " decks the height of the spindle is different..

Mike I have 2 42 inch decks 1981 (05-42MS02) If you put this Model# in here

The jak shafts are 7" x 3/4" with keyed shaft for pullys, if you notice they have what looks like a nut but it is part of the shaft. I think that is for holding the shaft with a wrench so you can take the blade nut of,also the nut for the pullys. At least that is what I did!

Thanks...I understand the basic setup of the spindles as I have dealt with them for many years. Where I am confused is the different types. I have always dealt with the spindles that have the 1-1/8" nut on both sides of the blade. So when I found the set of 3 spindles with the 2-1/4" flat nut on the spindle side of the blade, that was new to me. It looks like it is part of the spindle just like the other ones I have. All 3 shafts are in great shape so I might use them for my buildup...I will just have to use a ford wrench to hold the shaft!

I will have to do some research to see what years used the shaft with the larger nut on them...

Ah ha!!!! I found the big nut spindle shafts! They are from 1978-1979 decks...use 95-48ms01 to see what I am talking about...

1977 used the spindle shaft with the flats on them and 1980 used the shafts with the 1-1/8" nut on the shaft...

I have graduated!
