Ginge 0 #1 Posted March 20, 2011 Hi Guys, My D'160 has a 16 HP Onan in it, It was running great till one day last week.. ..It started surging & backfiring, I done the valve clearences ..no change and they were pretty good anyway, I have cleaned the carby, plugs, checked wiring ...all looks good?? But no change Tonite I noticed that on the left hand cylinder there was a bit of gas coming out of the exhaust Any help appreciated Cheers Ginge
sorekiwi 761 #2 Posted March 20, 2011 I dont know too much about the D series Onans Ginge, but I've played a bit with the P220's (20hp). First thing I'd do is check the compressions. Onans have a bad habit of losing the intake valve seat - Its a steel seat shrunk into the aluminum block. If the engine has been overheated, the seat can loosen up in the block. A compression check might point you in in that direction. If compression is low on that cylinder you can remove the inlet manifold and see the bottom part of the valve seat through the port. If it is in fact loose, it is repairable with an oversize seat, but it does require a machineshop to cut the counterbore for the new seat.
