headchef1971 0 #1 Posted March 18, 2011 i have a 1054 wheel horse with a k241 3ngine (year 1954) . I have an issue with tuning . it starts but when i try to increase the throttle it either has now power and wants to stall or it back fires. it does start and idles well. i just cleaned out the fuel tank with a chemical that strips the rust. so the tank is clean. the fuel line is free from debris. there is fuel going to the fuel pump. and fuel is getting to the carb. i tried for 2 hours to adjust the low and main needles . but i just cant get it to run right . i did notice a little smoke from the breather right behind the carb. i dont know if that has anything to do with it. also as i increased and decreased the main jet little black smoke came out of the exhaust. before i cleaned the tank i cleaned out the carb with carb cleaner also. i have the manual but im stuck now. does the carb need to be rebuilt? need help.. also by playing with the throttle and choke i dislodged the cables that run under the main panel under the levers. how can fix that. there is just a U groove there. i guess they where never fastened correctly to it. ive read all the posts on this forum but there are so many variables.dont know where to start. thank you
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted March 18, 2011 To start your tractor is a 64 not 54, I would start with a carb rebuild, they are cheap, make sure to clean all the little holes in the needle and all you find in the carb. buy a new carb. to engine mounting gasket, if it still acts up I would try a new set of points and a condenser, but I would lean to the carb. Can't help on the cables I've never owned a 1054.
rmaynard 16,331 #3 Posted March 18, 2011 Sounds like carburetor problems to me also. Check the throttle shaft for play. If there is too much side to side play, you will be sucking air. Also, the bowl gasket needs to have a good tight seal, as well as the carb to engine gasket as Kelly said. Rebuilding the carburetor with a standard kit only replaces the float valve/seat and bowl gaskets. There is nothing in the kit that actual "rebuilds" the carburetor. To do a proper carburetor servicing, you have to clean the entire thing by soaking it in a good carb cleaner. The main needle valve needs to be cleaned. It is hollow and needs to be open from the top holes to the bottom holes. All of the tiny passages inside the carb need to be clean and free flowing. Places where air can leak into the carb such as around the throttle shaft have to be properly sealed.
jimt1971 237 #4 Posted March 18, 2011 Hello, 1054's are very touchy fuel wise. You may need to pull the tank and get it boiled out at a machine shop. Also, if the fuel lines are original or older they will need to be replaced. It takes 5 ft of fuel line to replace the fuel lines in that beast. What may be happening is that with todays fuels they inside is colapsing. Jim
Kelly 1,033 #5 Posted March 18, 2011 Add a inline filter that you can get to, it will help.
Lane Ranger 11,410 #6 Posted March 19, 2011 All the pointers you have been given sound right on target to me. Those old K241's with the starter/generator on the 1054's will run a very long time but they need to get clean fuel thru a good line and clean carb. The tank can also get sediment and or rust but it is a good thing to do to change the fuel lines and clean the carbs out. We run Stabil in fuel also due to the seasonal changes in fuel and variation in the use of the tractor. Seaform also helps clean the crabon out of the motor in the vavles and head area. http://www.seafoamsales.com/
theoldwizard1 2 #7 Posted March 19, 2011 If you are going to do a carb rebuild, do yourself a favor and buy a gallon of ChemDip. I will last you a life time ! Disassemble the carb and soak all the parts in ChemDip at least 12 hours (overnight) before re-assembly. If you can't find anyone to service the gas tank, buy a couple of quarts of rubbing alcohol at your local drug store. Remove the tank and remove the gasoline. Refill the tank with the alcohol and let sit for several hours. Shake a couple time during the soak. Drain, rinse with clean gas. Definitely replace all hoses. WH nut 553 #8 Posted March 20, 2011 Pull the fitting out of the bottom of the tank. There is suppose to be a screen on the tank side. Make sure its not all rotted and plugging the fitting. Sounds like you are getting gas, but not enough
Anglo Traction 761 #9 Posted March 20, 2011 Agree it sounds like a Fuel issue. Little smoke from the Breather vent below the Carb possibly indicates Crankcase pressure (should be in vacuum), possibly due to Rings worn. Should not relate to your Fuel issue. What is the condition of your Air Filter?. Black smoke indicates Rich fuel mixture. Hesitation on throttle increase could be Fuel/Air ratio, so if you've tried to adjust the Low/High speed Needles from the Presets quoted in the Manual without any improvement, then yes, look to clean and rebuild the Carb. Have you tried to run it with the Filter off ?, i.e. to ensure the Choke Plate is opened, as well as confirmed no air starvation?.
