wheel horse tractor guy 0 #1 Posted March 10, 2011 How hard is it to rebuild a kohler 10 horse. I have a b-100 8 speed that i bought. The guy who i bought it from said that the drive belt broke at the end of last season. I got it home and started working on it. tractor is nice lookin it has ags all around and a side discharge mowerdeck but the engine smokes i don't know what to do. rmaynard 16,333 #2 Posted March 10, 2011 I am in the process of rebuilding a K241 at this time. If you have basic tools, a torque wrench, feeler gauge, piston ring insertion tool and ring compressor, and a meter, a place to work, and a good machine shop close by that will not overcharge for work, rebuilding the engine is not that difficult. I have been converting a K241AS (small oil pan), to a K241S (large pan). I am using all the internals from the K241AS, and a block from a newer K241S. Other than a problem with rings not having the correct end gaps and having to be replaced, everything has gone smoothly and I am at the point now where I am assembling the sheet metal, installing the coil, points, carburetor, fuel pump and starter. Should be firing it up for the first time this weekend. I had to do the following, which required the use of a machine shop: 1. Turn the crankshaft - $30.00 2. Bore & hone the cylinder - $50.00 3. Grind the valve seats - Included with the engine bore The K241S block and pan cost $65.00 Parts, which included gaskets, seals, piston, rings, connecting rod, valves, throttle shaft kit, carburetor kit, fuel pump, points, condenser, and spark plug, cost me a total of $180.00. So far, my cost not counting my own labor is $325.00. I think this is good considering that a rebuilt engine costs about $600.00. I am not only getting a good engine that I know was done right, but it has been a great learning experience for me. I began the project on January 9, and have only been working a couple of hours per week at the rebuild due to other commitments. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
