Maybe its just me...

I can't help myself - this just annoyed me too much - I have to ask if I'm alone in the way I feel...

Recently I responded to a classified ad (specific names etc not necessary) where the seller indicated he/she had many parts available for XXX tractors - if there was anything anyone needed, contact he/she directly. So I did. It was a small part, no big deal. Maybe worth 10 bucks.

Several days later, the response I got was (in no such terms) yes, I have that part and have just listed it on eBay.

Are you kidding me? I have to admit, I was actually a bit offended at that response. It was like, let me throw the bait out on RedSquare and then yes, I have what you need, now go fight the rest of the world wide web for it. I was instantly annoyed, but just shrugged it off as I shook my head in amazement at the human greed the internet continues to exude on a daily basis.

But I let a few days pass and did in fact bid - only because it was cheap and no one else bid. Since that day though, I continued to think about it again and again. In hindsight, I really wish I hadn't bid as a matter of principle and just let the part go unsold. The only solace I had though, is knowing that for a measly 9 dollar part the seller got whacked with both eBay and PayPal fees. Hope the remaining 6 bucks went somewhere special.

Does anyone see where I'm coming from or am I just being overly sensitive?

Sounds annoying to me too Matt. Not that the seller did not have the right to do what he/she did but it certainly is annoying to the buyer.

Classified Posting rules

The classifieds are for MEMBER equipment only. Please do not post links to ad's or auctions other than your own. Any such postings will be deleted. Posting of any comments other than questions regarding the ad will be removed. Please help us keep the classified section on track.

If you are posting an item for sale you MUST include your location and a price. Items posted without a location or price are subject to removal.

IMPORTANT:

RedSquare is not responsible for the accuracy of the listings.

First and foremost, "make all deals at your own risk" and "settle all disputes off of the forum". It is your responsibility to validate the legitimacy of the seller and the sale.

You may report a failed transaction to the moderator / administration team which will be evaluated for repeat offenders. Any effort to deliberately deceive or defraud members will result in expulsion from the forum

While I sympathize with you in this situation, the rules copied and pasted above clearly state to "settle all disputes off of the forum". This kind of post can only lead to hard feelings among members.

Matt,

I would say that if someone posts items for sale here they should have a timeframe in which they will wait for responses prior to ebay. The other option is to clearly post a link to an ebay item they have on ebay. Sounds like this one was a slip up by the seller imo. You informed him/her that you were interested and they should have offered it to you.. That sucks but the seller lost out on that one.

I'm with Matt... dangling parts on Redsquare looking to start an Ebay bidding war between us is rude to say the least..... Post it on Redsquare and if there are no bites then post it to Ebay, Craigslist or whatever else neccesary to expand your audience and sell it.

P.S.---Hey Moderators, don't we have a rule that EVERYTHING for sale needs to be listed woth a price? How about we tell this guy that he needs to list EVERY item with a location and price versus cutting and pasting the dispute rules for Matt to read???

The WH part Matt asked for was never listed on Redsquare so no rule was broken as far as an asking price goes. I think the issue is that the seller listed the part on E-Bay after finding out Matt was interested.

Diry dealing? Yes. But it also sounds like Matt got a better price and the seller had to pay E-Bay/Pay-Pal fees and actually lost money by not selling it to Matt in the first place.

Ahh, the ol' bait and switch. I was just talking about this same tactic earlier today. I actually see it happening quite regularly now on a couple different forums I watch. Sign of the times I guess, what are you gonna do? Bottom line is, you want to play, you got to pay. Doesn't make it right though. You are correct.

Tony, if you read my post, the rule you mentioned about price and location is in there. My intent in posting those rules was to prevent comments from getting out of hand, and incorrect assumptions from being made, causing hard feelings between members. To clear one thing up, I wasn't the member who had the item for sale. I assume you'll take my word for that, and I'll have no hard feelings.

It is apparent to me that my post was out of line, as it should be left to the Moderating team to quote rules where necessary. It is their job, which they do quite well. And now I will STFU.

I just went through and looked at that guy's ads. Thanks for the heads up. I never would've thought about doing what this guy is doing. Its unfortunate that people are pulling that kind of BS on RS.

And BTW it'll come back to him someday. It always does.

I agree with grnlark.

I pm the seller with parts wanted requests on numerous parts, and never got any answer to pms, and the next day i see the parts that i requested a price of were on ebay.

I even stayed up to 3am in the morning (because of time differance in Uk ) to bid on items that i requested about. I still didnt get the parts.

Hello All--

just for the record I never thought it was Jim. I know Matt from way back and am in his corner and my post was intended to put a little heat on the guy that is dangling the parts and then listing them.

nuff said....

I am not positive who the alleged culprit is, but if it is who I think it is, didn't he clearly state that he was posting many of the items on eBay if you needed to see them?

Did you check the date that he posted on RedSquare, and the date that the item was listed on eBay? If in fact the item was listed on eBay on or before the post on RS, or even before your first inquiry, then you have no gripe. But if he put it on eBay only after you showed an interest in it, then that's wrong.

Back in September of last year, I placed an item in the "for sale" category here. This was before we had the rule that a price must be listed. I was asking for offers to be sent via PM or email. I also stated that if the item was not sold by a certain date, it would go on eBay. The offers that I got were not what I felt the item was worth, so it went on eBay 3 times before it was sold.

My point is that if an item is listed here, there should be a cut off date, after which if it is listed on eBay or other venue, that is where you would have to buy it. Also, if an item is listed here, and simultaneously listed on eBay, or later listed on eBay, then the listing link should accompany the RS ad or be added into the thread.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I really did (and do) not want this to turn into an investigation thread as to who the seller is/was. I just wanted to make a point that baiting other members like this is (IMO) questionable and crappy behavior. I would never do it to someone else and just didn't think it was right that it was being done to me and more than likely others as well.

The ad said to contact for parts, which I did. That was a Saturday. I then recieved an email from the seller the same day saying "let me check, I'm sure I have it". The following Friday (6 days later) I emailed him again to follow up and got a response saying (in not-exact terms), "Oh yeah, I found it and listed it on eBay here's the item number"

A little intrigue never hurt anyone. There are probably a few members that are thinking to themselves right now "did I ever do that?".

"Oh yeah, I found it and listed it on eBay here's the item number"

I agree, that's wrong.

The thing to remember is that the internet has little privacy. With no more than a couple of quick searches, I discovered the "party in question" and will base any of my future dealings with him accordingly.

A thread like this is good, as it may help other members to avoid the same situation in the future.

Here's my 2 cents........ If you post an item for sale here on RS you need to CLEARLY indicate that the part is listed on eBay or will be listed on eBay shortly. If you ask RS members for information about a part..... with the sole intent to maximize your return..... IT SHOULD ALSO BE CLEARLY STATED. No ifs, ands or buts........

I'm all for helping an individual figure out what they have and provide an estimated market value. But, to merely extract information or solicited buyers to increase competition/price here through RS IMO is not the genuine intent of the forum.

Why? Because this forum is suppose to be a group of individuals who work together on a common interest/hobby. Does that mean one cannot profit from a sale generated through RS? NO. Profit is what keeps this going. I just personally do not have the time to play games and try to figure out what the intent of an individual is...... That's why I joined RS and others joined..... we wanted to be part of a group who focuses on the common interest without the usual BS associated with other general venues. As a member of RS you have made a commitment to the group and to the hobby. I've got a ton of parts but do not regularly peddle them here on RS or on eBay. If someone posts a

It's always like that. It happened to me with buying a tractor i told the guy i was interested and i would be there this weekend. Now i told him on a thursday i'll pick it up on saturday morning. The guy said ok it's yours if you don't come sunday i will call the next person. I started heading down there on saturday morning called the guy told him i'm on my way. He already sold it on friday for $50 more sorry i didn't think you were coming. i was pissed. Tractor was a c-141 with attachments lawn roller, mowerdeck , grader blade , and plow for $350.
