First *real* use of the 854!

Took her for a spin around the yard, picking up sticks and garden waste to burn.

(normally everything goes into the compost pile, but this is all stuff with SEEDS from last fall..dont want seeds in the compost..so this is all for a yearly Spring burn)

next step, getting the mowing deck up and running.

Just had a sucessful weekend getting the 854 all spruced up for the season!

Did an oil change, new spark plug, (still need an air filter and trans fluid change..will get to that this week)

Thanks to everyone on Redsquare for good tips and advice!

I had a few other threads going this weekend with specific questions:

Spring Maintenance thread.

Engine pulley thread.

Biggest project for the weekend was getting the mower deck up and running!

it was a bit of a comedy for awhile there, figuring out how to get the thing installed..at first, it wouldnt fit under the tractor! I tried sliding it between the wheels, but the mower deck was too long! doesnt fit inbetween the rear wheels and the front wheels..I thought "hmmm..maybe you have to remove the foot rest?" So I was about to try that, when it came to me..duh, just turn the steering wheel, angle the front tires, and it fits! :WRS: ( little things that seem obvious after the fact! ) :)

Got it fitted, new belt installed..fired it up..it works! :disgust:

blade was hitting the front edge though..took it back off, bent the sheet metal some, put it back on..works perfectly! and I read a recent thread here where people were talking about these old gear-driven decks being very loud...Mine is not loud at all! I would consider it quite quiet actually..the deck is significantly less loud than the engine..I havent greased the deck yet, but its allready quite well lubed up from the previous owner...One side is missing the grease cover, its just covered over with duct tape (visable in the photos below) but when I peeled off the tape, there was a lot of grease in there, so lubrication seems fine, for now..

So here is my tractor in working form, with all the toys I have for it so far!

Mower deck installed, and the 1976 wheel horse dump cart..(I might consider looking for a snow plow someday, but for now its going to be a "summer only" machine..I have my Ariens snowblower for snow removal chores..I think my wheel horse will hibernate during the winter, for the time being anyway..)

1964 WH model RM-364 mower deck.

1976 WH model 67-10DC01 dump cart.

Thanks for the help everyone! :hide:

I really appreciate this forum! :hide:

I'm very pleased with my antique round hood..

as I said, eventually I plan to do a full tear-down and restore, but probably not for a few years yet..this summer she will do some mowing, and the cart will get a lot of use as well..fun!

JERSEYHAWG / Glenn

Does anyone know what happened to this fellow Scot and his 854 restoration?  I have seen his web page  and some you tubes on his 854, matter of fact I tried a email re the parking brake issue.

Did he fall off the radar?

Hey Glenn,

I just saw your email! ;)

just replied..

yeah, im still here..I havent posted much lately because I dont have much new going on with the 854..

So nothing much to say, from me..but im still checking things out on the forum a lot..

I still havent gotten that brake fixed! somehow it went "on the back burner"..dont know why really..

I still plan to work on it though..

In the spring, before the first mowing, im going to take off the carb and clean it..I had some rough running late last summer,

and it will only run at half-choke..So a carb cleaning is in order..

I have cleaned the carb on my 1971 Ariens snowblower (with original H70 Tecumseh) but I have

never worked on a Kohler carb before..so im sure I will be asking questions about that in a few months..

Other than that, the 854 is still humming along! :)

it has become my primary mower..

I would like to find a snow plow for it as well, I did research on this forum to find out

what type of plow I need, and I have been watching my local craigslist..

I use the Ariens snowblower as my main winter snow removal tool..but I would to use the 854 occasionally

for the wet slushy snow, that the snowblower doesnt handle well..
