Wheel Weights vs Fluid Filled Tires

Recommended Posts

What is everyones thought on the idea of have tires filled with washer fluid (or simular) or wheel weights? And if you do fill the tires with fluid, how much fluid can put in a 23x12x12?

I do both with my plow and snow blower tractors (fill them and use weights).

If I were only going to do one or the other, I would use the weights. Because they remove easily and you may not want weight when your lawn is soft, or if you get a puncture it's less of a problem, and it's easier to install a tire on to the tractor if it isn't heavy.

good question i was thinking of having my tires fill myself. i do have a good set of wheel weights that weigh in at around 49 pounds a piece and the added 40 to 50 pounds of liquid would be nice to! :banghead:

i put rim gaurd in mine i think 10 or 11 pounds a gallon. it is environmentally safe also. i was concerned with my dogs getting a hold of some if there was a leak........

I agree with most that wheel weights are more flexible. And if there is a puncture a lot neater!!

If however you are sure you will always want the weight then filling isn't a bad idea. MY D200 spends 95% of her time with her loader on so I went with rim guard in the rears in addition to the counter weight set up. The guy who provided the rim guard had a chart that indicated just over 8 gals was recommended for her tires. I put 7.5in each tire at about 11 lbs per gal.

I used RV antifreeze in mine. I chose that because it is non-toxic and should inhibit corrosion. Rimguard is probably better, but there are no dealers in my suburban county.

I have a set of ags mounted on spare rims that I use for plowing snow in the winter. The extra weight is a non-issue because I don't need to keep them installed in summer.

I also bought one of those tractor tire pressure gauges that tolerate liquid. It was under $8 on Amazon (Milton Tractor Tire Gauge.)

With just one pair of 12" rear tires, you would want just to add the weights (need the weight in winter & a hard 20#psi, and in summer to be very light and a soft 10#).

TWO pairs of tires is an excellent idea: one heavy pair for winter and a light soft pair for summer mowing. It's about the same effort to change the weights as compared to actually changing filled tires on your tractors. Buying a new pair of weights is usually more $$ than having filled tires, but then since you have the weights; could add weights to the filled tires for over 100# per tire. Rim guard is the best by far.

I went with windsheild washer fluid....couldn't find wheel weights around here....that I could afford.

Got a 55 gallon drum for about $55....pretty good deal, and I still have plenty of WW fluid for the truck!

on my C100 I put weights and liquid filled ags works great for all heavy work ( plowing, cultivating, digging, etc. ) I use another tractor for cutting grass. unless there is a mole problem, I have found the heavy ags do wonders with compacting ground torn up by moles. I think two sets of tires is a great idea but two sets of horses is better :banghead:

I have ags at all four corners. Fronts are loaded with 2 gallons of washer fluid and cast iron WH wieghts. The back are loaded also with 8 gallons washer fluid and 40# cast iron weights. Front = 42# each and the back =105# each. Plus my 260# butt and I have'nt had a need for chains. :banghead:
