Torino 15 #1 Posted May 10, 2008 I just bought a '69 Electro 12. It seems to run great but really slows while mowing like the engine does not have enough power. If is was the hydro trans would the engine slow like that?
kj4kicks 154 #2 Posted May 10, 2008 If it's just when you're mowing, it may have some spindles or pulleys binding. If it does it just cruising around after it's warmed up, you may have a hydro issue. A 12 hp should have more than enough power to mow as fast as you sensibly can. Are you running it at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle?
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #3 Posted May 10, 2008 1) Check Hydro fluid level 2) Check that the towing valve is not in the tow position
Torino 15 #4 Posted May 10, 2008 I was mowing at full throttle. The blades seem to turn pretty easy by hand. The valve is not in the tow position. One question about the fluid level do I screw in the dip stick to check the level or not. If is is the hydo will the engine rpms drop when it slows? It's like the engine slows, when I release the pto the rpms return.
Jim_M 179 #5 Posted May 10, 2008 when I release the pto the rpms return. If that's the case, check the bearings in the pto and the mower deck and drive/idler bearings as soon as it's warm enough to start causing problems. You've got a bearing siezing up somewhere. I think it's safe to rule out the hydro.
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #6 Posted May 11, 2008 I agree it is not the hydro. But, to answer the question - if it is the screw in metal plug dip stick you take it out, wipe it, insert it but do not screw it in, then check it. Same goes for the K301 with the same type of dip stick. Keep a wrench in the tool box (I find if I hand screw the engine dip stick sometimes I can get it off without the wrench - but not always. Best of luck. PS - Toro has the manual for your machine online for free. And it is a much better scan than the one for the 69 Charger.
Torino 15 #7 Posted May 18, 2008 Got a chance to check the deck. It seemed the belt was to tight so I loosened it up a bit and it works fine now. I mowed some foot tall grass with no problems.
