I got my replacement hub in today so I took the ol wheel horse out for a spin. Didnt make it far. Im pretty sure the drive belt is a little long(stretched) and thats why it keeps popping off. The motor seems to be running at higher rpms than it should.

Take a look at this picture and see if my throttle cable is in the correct hole. It moves that part back and forth but isnt changing the idle. Its high idle all the time.

I know these tires are big but they seem to be severally overloading the engine. Mind you i dont wanna do anything but ride.

Ive also got a whole lot of noise coming from the engine when i have the clutch pushed in. If the motor was messed up would i hear something when its just sitting there running?

Did you have the governor arm loose or off of the governor shaft? :whistle:

Are you sure the racket is coming from the engine and not the drive system? After I rebuilt my 312-8, the first time I fired it up, when I pushed the clutch all the way in it began to scream - a metal-on-metal screech - very scary. Sounded like it was the motor, but I now think it was the tensioner pulley scraping the underside of the fender pan. I say "was" because after I drove it around for a few minutes and worked the clutch it quieted down. I hadn't taken the time to wire brush the rust off the pulleys before I installed a new drive belt (my VERY BAD!!!) and I think things just got to bouncing and dragging until the rust wore off. Seems fine now.

Anyway, just a thought - I'm sure the pro's in our group will have a much better diagnosis!

No i didnt. I had the carb off and the cable but didnt touch the governor at all.

Are you sure the racket is coming from the engine and not the drive system?

No. The engine sounds find when its just sitting there. They way i hope it is driveline related.

Does the throttle control disc move freely without the cable hooked to it?

(make sure the cable bracket is not binding the control disc.)

With the cable unhooked and the throttle lever in the idle (slow) position, rotate the control disc clockwise (looking at it from in front of the tractor) as far as you can. The throttle shaft on the carburetor should move against the idle speed adjusting screw. (governor arm will move towards the carburetor) Start the engine with it in this position and see if it will idle.

Reattach the cable so there is a little play in the control disc before it starts to move the governor arm. (you might need to turn the throttle cable bracket CLOCKWISE to allow this to happen -- meaning: pull it up around towards the muffler. If it won't move, loosen the governor shaft bushing with a thin 3/4" wrench A LITTLE until it will move, then SNUG the bushing up again.)
