Firing Up New Rebuild

I have a Kohler K-161 that I have totally rebuilt the only thing orginal is the crank and even that was turned. Now heres the low down. I rebuilt it 7 years ago, it was only fired up for less than 1 minute. Now I had never got back around to messing with it because too many irons in the fire. I want to get back to this project. I would like to fire it back up and get it running. I have put oil down the spark plug hole a few times like tha Kohler manual says to do. I guess Iam just concerned that everything in there is too dry and will cause damage. What do you all think? Should I take the pan off and lube everthing again? or just put some more oil down it and rotate by hand then try to fire.

If the engine isn't bolted down. I think it wouldn't be bad if you fliped it over a few times, just make sure you pull the plug and pull it over A few times before you try to start it. If you get smoke out of it at first it should be normal for putting oil in the plug hole and or flipping it. :banghead: good luck!!

I have had engines that have not been running in 10 or 15 years and didn't do anything special as far as lubrication - other than a few squirts of oil through the spark plug hole.

I generally leave the spark plug out and turn it over a few times (by rope or electric starter), reinstall the plug, then proceed as normal.

The fact that you did run it - even though it was only for a minute - would have coated the internals with oil and (hopefully) prevented rust/corrosion.

The most critical area on these engines is the camshaft pin. If you oiled it well during assembly, then it ran for a little while, the recess inside the cam should still have plenty of oil to prevent seizure.
