smoreau 658 #1 Posted January 23, 2011 :wh: seen a ad on craigs list, its been on there for about 6 weeks so desided to call today. he had about 5 round hoods and about 8 other . this was the best one and I had to bring it home. he wanted 250 but got him down to 200 with out the deck. (deck wasn't very good, froze up solid and very rusty) It was frozen to the ground and covered with snow, took a 6' 2x4 to free it from its frozen resting spot. (11 deg outside) the engine is a k161 and looked complete. this is how I found it. this is my pride and joy on her new toy!! her name is Gabby and she is very happy with this tractor!! And when I got it home it was thawed out a little. brought it home in my venture van-horse haller I didn't know if it ran but I could roll it over by hand and it had compression. The trans had a good boot on it and the shifter moved fine and rear wheels rolled freely. My buddy and I lifted the hood and pulled the air cleaner and spraid some starting fluid in the carb started for about 3 sec . we looked at the inside of the tank and it was clean. put some gas in it and checked the oil and started it up. After about 20 sec. it idled on its own and ran better then I could have ever hoped for. my buddy thought I paid too much for thi but after he heard it run he quickly changed his mind. All in all it was a great day for my little girl So I need some is this the right engine? there is a battery box but no starter. missing starter generator? and is the seat correct? if so Thats 2 seats I need made like this. don't think the gas tank is correct eather. Thank you all for your input on this one before hand!! :ROTF:
buckeye 5 #2 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice find Its a 1966. should have a tecumseh h60 motor. And that is the original seat. :banghead:
Hammerhead 817 #3 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice haul out in the cold! That is a 1966 Lawn Ranger with the wrong engine. It should have a H60 Tecumseh engine, which is a 6 hp. All else looks pretty good and original. The seat is correct. Way to go! Keith :banghead:
rmaynard 16,321 #4 Posted January 23, 2011 Very nice haul. Thanks for the pictures. I think you got a very good deal. :banghead:
VinsRJ 723 #5 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice save and IMO the Kohler is an up-grade to the Tech H60, keep it. :banghead:
boovuc 1,090 #6 Posted January 23, 2011 I'm amazed of the physical condition it was in. It doesn't look too bad for something the PM had sitting outside in the snow. And then to have it fire up! Great score! BooVuc Mill Hall, PA

smoreau 658 #8 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice save and IMO the Kohler is an up-grade to the Tech H60, keep it. I plan on keeping it!! just need a starter generator for it. I beleve the fuel tank is suppost to be round or oval, this one is square and is held to the hood with 4 srewe bolts I think I can make it look good again and have ele. start also. my 8 year old will never be get it going on her own the way it is . I think i can fit my 32" sickel bar on this one. ( no rj yet )

Also were you located I have a descent extra deck I would get rid of cheap also a parts tractor whats left of it if you should need anything!! :banghead:
smoreau 658 #10 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice find!! My boys love their ranger and I was surprised what these liitle things will do!!! Also were you located I have a descent extra deck I would get rid of cheap also a parts tractor whats left of it if you should need anything!! thanks but i'm thinking of putting a 32" front sickel bar that I got on my last haul on this one. I'm in Reese MI and I found this in Flint MI about 45 min away. It was A nice road trip for a very cold day. Even better it runs!!! and I drove it to its new parking spot INSIDE!!! that was the best part for the offer though. what I do need is a starter generator for a k161. that would help out alot! Gene_S 93 #11 Posted January 23, 2011 Thats a really cool find... I'd keep the 7hp kohler and just find a recoil shroud for it and then you wont need the battery or battery box!!! Yes it should have a H60 tucky but the Kohler is a nice upgrade like Vince said... If you go adding a starter generator you won't have much or no room for a gas tank...
AMC RULES 37,196 #12 Posted January 23, 2011 Awesome find, how does a tractor like that sit on Craigslist for over 6 weeks. I think Gabby did real good. :banghead:

Kelly 1,033 #16 Posted January 23, 2011 I've been eye balling the orange 854 for a few weeks but the price is WAY to high, if you put a gen. on you will not have room for a gas tank at all, you might get away with a gear drive starter but you will have to swap more parts. by the way nice score, was he a fair guy to deal with?? I might call him tomorrow.

I might call him tomorrow. he was very quiet and he had lots of tractors of all types. speed x, very big bolwins, and a sears surburban with a fel. it had a brigs in it just to name a few. I think he is alittle high on his pricese and some of them he wan't to check ebay for what they are going for. I do think this was in the best shape that he had but give him a call. give me a call if you want to know more. Scott
Redbirdman 7 #18 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice find............... and remember (if you seen some of my posts) It ain't about the tractor, it's about the kids! And how these darn mechanical things bring generations together! In the 40 plus years with my son, 10 with my grandson and the 20 something with my grandaughter I never once remember anything but good times with them! dgoyette 12 #21 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice find and another horse saved from the elements! I agree that although it came with a TEC the k161 is a super bonus. I would really like a Kohler on the Ranger I use around the yard.
buckeye 5 #22 Posted January 23, 2011 From what I see, that looks like the original gas tank.
Philipp 1 #23 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice find! Could you tell me the size of the rear and front pulley? I found somewhere that the original belt length is 70" but on my ranger the belt is too long.
dclarke 4,082 #24 Posted January 23, 2011 Nice looking Ranger! Good luck with it.
smoreau 658 #25 Posted January 23, 2011 while I couldn't sleep last night I was thinking, I;m going to need some extra foot rests and peddals for her feet. there is now way blocks are going to work. I think I can make some dimond plate running boards and some extra clutch-brake pedal. yes I think that will work. Just wish it was warmer out. I need to finish My 875 restore first. and now a lawn ranger. I think I caught the bug again. :ROTF:
