zieg72 209 #2 Posted January 22, 2011 Any of mine have not failed to start unless I have a battery failure but that has been several years since that happened.

bell 11 #4 Posted January 22, 2011 Other than a slight shifter issue and the bolt working loose on my blade angle lever, it's been very smooth. :banghead:
Kelly 1,033 #5 Posted January 22, 2011 So far nothing has failed, but this is the worst part of winter we are in right now, with at least another month to go, temps today high of 12 deg. with a slight breeze so the wind Chill is going to be around 0deg. at least we havn't got much snow this year, only about 20 total, and not at one time. JimD 3,347 #6 Posted January 22, 2011 I've had good luck so far with the new modded C85 plow tractor, and great luck with the B60 in previous years These machine just seem to keep proving themselves over and over. :banghead:
harleyjj 2 #7 Posted January 22, 2011 I fought with mine to get it started last night after rebuilding the carb and installing new battery and cables last weekend. Seems to crank fine but acted flooded and there was what Im pretty sure was gasoline coming out of the top of the carb somwhere ??? It finally came to life after I aimed a hairdryer down the throat of the carb while cranking it over. Other than that I have had dead battery, no-start for an unknown reason, hub come loose, choke cable come out of the mount, ran out of gas, spark plug came loose. all in all my tractor has been a royal pain in the buttocks this year! and with out having enough space in the garage to work on it I have been freezing my rear off outside to repair it. Hopefully as time and repairs go on it will get better, I have only had it a few months and didnt have much spare time to sort it out before the snow hit. P.S. It was 7 degrees out when I tried to start it last night.
smoreau 658 #8 Posted January 22, 2011 :hide: I have had some on my snow blower and pto attachmet and parts should be here today. but my 48" dozer blade is awsome and the 417a runs like a top! just your normal maintenace of checking the oil and making shure every thing is in good working order. you know its 25 years old, wair items should be replaced. Thats part of the fun!! :hide:

KC9KAS 4,744 #10 Posted January 22, 2011 I have had good luck with my snow plowing machine, although we have only had 2 snow-falls this season to plow. I have only plowed for 4-5 hours total this season, but that is enough to keep me happy.
racinfool40 203 #11 Posted January 22, 2011 well the 70 raider with push blade and the C-161 with blower have been great beside's a little slow to start in cold weather. So I can say they have been great!!!But I prepared myself this year and made sure all the maintenance was done prior to the snow falling!!!! :banghead:
sgtsampay 117 #12 Posted January 22, 2011 Well, overall, my to tractors have been needing sometype of repair ever single storm so far. Most of it has been shearing keys and masterlinks, but sometimes, like yesterday a starter fails and such. Oh, well, I'm sure the tractors will run out of things to fix at some point. :banghead:
stevasaurus 23,287 #13 Posted January 22, 2011 Funny how you never get through the winter, when you did not fix a couple of things you knew were in need of attention in the fall. Sure as the weather is cold, those decisions come back to haunt you. Starter went south on one, and a bolt in the steering linkage on another. Both fixed now. All in all...a very nice winter so far. :banghead:
Jim_M 179 #14 Posted January 22, 2011 No problems all winter. I even got both diesel Wheel Horses started this morning. It was -3 last night and they're in an unheated garage. The diesel on the 520 has a glow plug but the one on the 654 doesn't, I just open the throttle and crank the starter until it starts smoking and banging, it always goes no matter what. dgjks6 8 #15 Posted January 22, 2011 Do you hear that? Its me knocking on wood. The 312-8 has never failed to start. The PTO switch in finnicky, but I now know how to fix that. Last time my son used it to plow it died at the bottom of the driveway. He managed to fix the problem himself. It needed gas. I am so proud of his mechanical ability. Confused99 2 #16 Posted January 22, 2011 All good for me except for the key coming out of the blower auger shaft. Easy fix and back in business :banghead:
Kelly 1,033 #17 Posted January 22, 2011 Most issues can be eliminated if we all fix them as they need it, reg. maintenance, on these old tractor goes along way, the cold plays heck on the batt.'s and fuel systems, and a good tune up in the fall, when the weather gets cold, a slight tweek on the carb to make it run better in the cold helps also, check your hub keys, you will be working them harder plowing than just mowing. bobert94 38 #18 Posted January 22, 2011 I"m with Kelly on the maintainance, your dealing with 1 or 2 cyl compared to your cars 6 or 8, and a very crude ign system compared to most modern cars. My 520 starts in 30 below even with 30 weight oil in it. Might have have some thing to do with the 50 degree garage its sets in. I know nobody likes a smart ask but i could'nt resist. The only problem i have is with the windows fogging up on the cab. :banghead:
flex 0 #19 Posted January 22, 2011 i have not had any problems this winter with my lawn ranger on first pull it starts
SALTYWRIGHT 861 #20 Posted January 22, 2011 I HAVE NOT HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH MY TRACTORS. MY PLOW TRACTORS (257-H AND MY GT-1800) ALWAYS GO. MY 417-8 DIESEL STARTS EVEN AT 15 DEG. I USE IT TO MOVE TRAILERS A ROUND. A GOOD WHEEL HORSE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN. RUSS :banghead:
mavfreak 11 #21 Posted January 22, 2011 I tried to start the C161 twin this morning but just wouldn't run good at all, but we had temp of -2 out and inside my garage was 5 above. I went out about 2:00pm it fired right up and ran fine with a temp of 12. I haven't been real happy with the briggs twin for cold weather running it just never wants to warm up, have to leave the choke part way on. if the temp is 35 or warmer I have no issue with it. I never had any problems with my Kohler.
varosd 1,185 #22 Posted January 22, 2011 No issues to report...but don't want the gremlins to hear me! Perhaps a big storm coming next week? finally got my ST extensions wings on. Thanks to Smokin Joe! :banghead:
IthacaJeff 151 #23 Posted January 22, 2011 It was about 5 deg today and I went out to plow yesterday's 5 inches and drifting. Started 2nd crank like every time, though it is hotwired because of some solinoid or ignition key issue over the past year. Got about 3/4 the way done and then clunk, sputter, stop. Before I got the real worried look I decided to check the obvious. Yup, Outta gas. Drained the last of the gas can, started right up on, yes, 2nd crank. The 310-8 never ceases to amaze. BUT. . . I did get it stuck for the first time in a long time. Managed to muscle it out by grabbing on the hitch and doing my muscle-head squats. Back is gonna be hurtin' tomorrow! sgtsampay 117 #24 Posted January 22, 2011 Hey mavfrek, I also have a briggs 16Hp twin and I to have to run the engien with 1/4 to 1/2 choke for it to not pop or at least no pop much. Also, it seems have the same power as my nieghbor's 12 Kohler. Is this what you are experiecing also? Hmm.
