camaross 0 #4 Posted January 21, 2011 unhook the battery , then loosen any bolts that hold the starter to the block and any wires connected to the starter you should be able to remove the starter chcek to see where the gear is and if it moves freely also check to see if the motor rotates
Buzz 502 #5 Posted January 21, 2011 The 4 hp K91 shouldn't have an electric starter. What tractor is it out of or what tractor do you plan on installing it? Have you pulled the spark plug and tried turning it over? Here's the Kohler service manual that might be helpful: http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp_2379.pdf
dgjks6 8 #6 Posted January 21, 2011 I am a novice to the entire engine rebuild process, but I am always ready to give an opinion, so take it for what it is worth. First I would remove the pieces necessary to get to the flywheel. then I would remove the spark plug. Then you sould be able to turn the flywhhel by hand. You can also try to turn the PTO side if there is a pulley on it. This is easy if there is a pully, but can be hard if there is not. As far as a rebuild. hmm. Ny quick ebay seach does not show any pre made k91 rebuild kits, so you may have to get each piece individually which can get expensive. Also, the block would need to be machined. I would guess b/n $300-400 to get it rebuilt if you did the work.
VinsRJ 723 #7 Posted January 22, 2011 K91's are fairly simple to work on. The vast majority were recoil start but there were some with a electric start (starter generator). As mentioned above I would first pull the plug..... mix a little 50/50 of ATF tranny fluid and acetone together and poor it into the bore, let it sit at least over night. If after a couple days soke time this doesn't free it up, pull the head and oil pan and take a look inside. Do not force it free with out looking in side the motor, I've had Clinton motors with stuck valves holding everything up.
Don1977 605 #8 Posted January 22, 2011 If it's been setting for a long time the rings may be stuck. You can take the Recoil Starter off and if it still doesn't turn try pulling some light oil in the spark plug hole and let it soak. It might free it up, something to try before you take it all apart. Kelly 1,033 #9 Posted January 22, 2011 I'm finding more and more engines that sat out in the weather and not used, the valves seize up in them, just a thought, I've had many that way, some I pull the head and a little oil on the valve if open, and very gently tap it with a hammer, some free up others don't.
