Kohler points vs electronic ignition

Recommended Posts

I have A wheel horse 312 h with a magnum engine[pointless] I am going to install a K341 that has points, can I just get 12volts from the ignition switch and run to points or do I have to switch points system to electronic? :banghead:

You can't use the Magnum magneto on a K series, so you will have to use the battery ignition (B I) system.

You'll need a different ignition switch, and you'll need to make some changes in the wiring.

The Magnums have an ignition systems that is energized by the flywheel magnets and controlled by a solid-state trigger mounted within the magneto assembly. (same principal as Briggs & Stratton Magnetron) To stop the spark, the system is "grounded out".

To install a K series engine with battery ignition, the coil needs a switched 12VDC power source - which requires an ignition switch that closes the circuit to power the coil vs. a switch that opens the ground circuit to allow a magneto to produce spark.

The bearing plate (with the corresponding magneto mounting posts) from a Magnum isn't easily installed on a K series. (different at the cam pin area) Installing a different ignition switch and changing a few wires around is much easier than trying to install the Magnum pieces on the K series - if that's even possible.
