bmwford94 0 #1 Posted January 14, 2011 I have a 1973 12hp kohler, and i just recently re bore the spark plug hole and put a new helicoil into the engine. The tractor has spark, compression, and it turns over just fine. I recently cleaned out the carburetor and added new fuel. It however does not start it just cranks and cranks and cranks. Any suggestions? I am eventually going to locate an original 8hp for the restoration so once that happens it wont be a problem, but for now id like to plow the snow yet this year. thanks :banghead:
rmaynard 16,340 #2 Posted January 14, 2011 Did you do the heli-coil with the head on or off?
bmwford94 0 #3 Posted January 14, 2011 i did it with the head on, my dad is an auto mechanic and he helped me do it, since he has experience with re-threading. He also was at it today and said "its like the engine is running backwards" meaning instead of taking in the gas it spits it out thru the carbeurator. its messed up!! rmaynard 16,340 #4 Posted January 15, 2011 My concern is that you got metal debris down under the head and it has migrated into the intake valve and locked it open. You may want to pull the head and see what going on. Just my 2 cents worth. Someone else may chime in with a different take. Good luck
Jim_M 179 #5 Posted January 15, 2011 You might have an aluminum chip, from tapping the hole, stuck in the intake valve and holding it open.
Jim_M 179 #6 Posted January 15, 2011 Bob posted while I was typing. That's what I get for typing so slow. We're in agreement though.

TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #9 Posted January 15, 2011 :banghead: Isn't this the tractor that wasn't running correctly BEFORE you did the Heli-Coil?
bmwford94 0 #10 Posted January 15, 2011 Yep this is the one where I parked it and it didn't work.
daemon2525 5 #11 Posted January 15, 2011 Sorry, who in the world would tap a hole where the crap could fall down into the engine and expect it to run.
WH nut 553 #12 Posted January 15, 2011 Its spitting because the intake valve is stuck open, just like the rest have said. Only takes a couple minutes to pull the head
bmwford94 0 #13 Posted January 15, 2011 Well I blew the whole general area of where I tapped the hole with air compressor, I'll remove the head on the thing and see whats down there or is the problem.
