squonk 43,899 #1 Posted January 10, 2011 Changed the oil in my new to me C-160. Kohler manual says 2 qts. Put in the 2 and the oil level reads overfull. The dipstick for all intents a puposes looks like the right one. Could the correct oil capacity be different than the Kohler Manual? :banghead:
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted January 11, 2011 Youe engine bolt right to the frame? it should on that year, the small pan for the shaker mount does not hold two quarts, then how long is the dip stick? I have a few 16hp I can check to see how long they are.
squonk 43,899 #3 Posted January 11, 2011 Engine bolts right to frame. I'll measure my dip stick tomorrow.
squonk 43,899 #4 Posted January 11, 2011 I decided to go back out and measure the stick. From the end where it measures the oil level to the very edge on the metal of the red cap it is 15 1/4"
Kelly 1,033 #5 Posted January 11, 2011 I just got back in the house, I'll check tomorrow after work.
Kelly 1,033 #6 Posted January 11, 2011 I forgot to ask does the tube go in the top of the block, or in the back through a alum. housing bolted to the back of the block behind the starter??
squonk 43,899 #7 Posted January 11, 2011 I believe it goes in the top of the block. I don't remember seeing any housing.
squonk 43,899 #8 Posted January 11, 2011 I just checked the Kohler manual again. I believe I have the K341AS engine. I didn't see the little asterisk that says the "A" engine's capacity is 1 3/4 qts. Maybe that's my problem all along. :banghead:
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #9 Posted January 11, 2011 It's a "normal" C-160 engine (K341S) with the big pan & the block-mounted dipstick tube. Here's proof:
squonk 43,899 #10 Posted January 11, 2011 I completely forgot I posted those. I'm draining out a pint tomorrow. :banghead:
Kelly 1,033 #11 Posted January 11, 2011 you do NOT have a 341AS yours is the 341S I think it should take 2 quarts but now you have me second guessing my self.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #12 Posted January 11, 2011 Two quarts is correct for the large oil pan engines. How far is it over the "full" mark? :banghead:
squonk 43,899 #13 Posted January 11, 2011 Almost a quarter inch.
squonk 43,899 #14 Posted January 11, 2011 Went out and looked again and it is indeed an "S" I got confused as my Power King has a 321AS. Ck'd the oil level again and it's just a shade under a 1/4 " over the full line. I tried taking a picture of the oil level but it didn't come out. This is without running the engine at all after filling. Do you think I should just leave it as it is?
rickv1957 75 #15 Posted January 11, 2011 Dont think that minor amount of overfill will hurt a thing! :banghead:
Duff 206 #16 Posted January 11, 2011 I may get duly (and appropriately!) chastised by the engine gurus here, but I run my splash-lubed Magnum engines about 1/4" over full to give a smidge more oil in the reservoir for mowing on the short but fairly steep parts of my lawn. Even though I'm only on the hills for a few seconds I still like that extra insurance! Hasn't seemed to hurt anything yet! ~Duff :banghead:
squonk 43,899 #17 Posted January 11, 2011 I think I'm losing my mind. Starting from the beginning. When I looked at this tractor it started up fine no smoke. I changed the oil and put 10w30 in for cold weather. 2 qts. It read slightly over full. Smoked blue for like 30 seconds on start up Ran it an hour plowing snow. Checked it when done and it was almost mid way between add and full. Added about 6 oz. Left it just below full. Plowed another day for 2 hrs. Smoked at start up. Checked when done and it was about at the SAME level it was after plowing for only 1 hr. Drained out the 10/30 and added 2 qts. of straight 30. Left it last night at about 1/4 " over full. Checked it again this afternoon an it's almost 1/2" over full with out doing a thing to the tractor. I do not smell any gas in the oil nor do I appear to be losing any in the tank. Started it up and it smoked like a pig. I drained a cup and a half of oil out to get to the full line. The plug has some carbon fouling but no wetness from fuel or oil. I can look down inside the plug hole and don't see any carbon or gunk. There is a tiny amount of oil gunk residue by the breather
