RJ Recoil

Why do people feel the recoil is so important on the RJ's.

example..

chnacke Recoil or Fairbanks-Morse Recoil

Did they ever just have the rope that comes off (after starting) recoil?

It's not important except for the "cool" factor of having the correct one. Most of them were trashed over the years of use.

They are no longer "just a tractor" to some folks.

People used to fix them up to ride in parades or just have fun & enjoy them (or even use them  ) and no one really cared what was "correct".

For safety reasons, I would want a recoil starter on the mid-engine tractors. Getting a pant leg pulled into a rope pulley would really ruin the fun. :banghead:

You can still find the "stamped steel" K91 recoils fairly cheap. Some of the Tecumseh recoil starters will work too.

Don't read to much into the "correctness" posts if you don't care about that. The info given is so people know what the correct parts are. You won't loose any points if your tractor is not 100 % correct.

I like to find the correct parts for my tractors but cost can be an issue sometimes. I will not pay $200 for a Schnake recoil starter, I can buy another RJ for that.

I like hearing the difference of philosophy. This hobby depends on your personality. A specific tractor speaks volumes about it's care giver. How it was restored, original, pieced together, actually useful etc... Obviously not to sound to philosophical. I would like to here what others think.

I am mostly interested in the visual appeal and its history. The correct everything does not matter so much. Just as long as it was fun doing.

Tom, now this is just my observations and opinions.

When someone wants big dollars for an RJ and states it all original.... the recoil IMO is a factor. It

I love the schnake recoil look. Some collectors use the cheaper stamped recoils for daily use then when going to a show will mount a schnake...

Here are three different pics of recoils mounted on rj's These 3 tractors were saved from an old wheehorse dealer last year. All 3 are owned by members here.
