dgjks6 8 #1 Posted January 7, 2011 So its Orthodox Christmas Eve. Took the night off work to go to church, but weather was bad, so after a nice family dinner came home and decided to find something to do decided to rebuild carb so it would be ready after engine completed. Got out my trusty Kohler manual and began work. First - ID and clean carb. No problems. Decided to leave choke and throttle plate alone. They seemed in good shape and the rebuild process for those, even for my own learning purpose, was too involved so they seemed in good shape. So I started the rebuild Step 1 - Install fuel inlet seat gasket and fuel inlet seat into carb body and torque to 35/45 in. lb. No problem now that I have the correct torque wrench Step 2 - install fuel inlet needle into inlet seat. Install float and slide float lin through float hinge and float hinge towers on carb body. no pic...sorry Now here is where the trouble starts. Set Float level: Invert carb so the float tab rests on the fuel inlet needle. There should be 11/64" clearance between the machined surface of body and the free and of float. Bend tab to adjust. I found the use my feeler gauge with the .15 to .023 fellers together gives me .171inches, so I measured and was in spec Set float drop: Turn the carb over to its normal operating position and allow float to drop to its lowest level. The float drop should be limited to 1 1/32" between the machined surface of the body and the free end of the float. Bend the float tab with a small screwdrive to adjust. The float on mine hits the float body and does not stop at 1 1/32 inch. I look for the float tab to adjust and I can't find it on the float. Where is it and how do I adjust it? Does it really matter. Here are some pics of my float: I can't find this tab on the float: Does this really matter? Am I being to anal trying to get every piece I take apart exactly in spec and torqued correctly? Cleaverkid 13 #3 Posted January 8, 2011 Sorry, DG, but I didn't see this till just now. You found the problem before we could help. I had the same problem on a Kohlelr carb myself. Never did figure out where that little tab went to, though! :banghead:
Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted January 8, 2011 Most of mine don't have that tab, I never worried about it, and the float level, I just eyeball mine to be level with the body, never had a problem.
linen beige 15 #5 Posted January 9, 2011 Most of mine don't have that tab, I never worried about it, and the float level, I just eyeball mine to be level with the body, never had a problem. The second tab is to stop the float from dropping so far in deeper fuel bowls that the fuel inlet needle falls out of the jet. The shallow bowls on WH carbs accomplishes the same end. 4xfourfun 30 #6 Posted January 11, 2011 None of mine have the 2nd tab either....I've just eyeballed the float level like Kelly and never worried about the drop. I couldn't imagine the float dropping enough(with the bowl on of course) to let the needle fall out. Glad you fixed it though!
Coadster32 793 #7 Posted January 11, 2011 I just eyeball mine to be level with the body That's what I do also.
