Stigian 1,234 #1 Posted May 6, 2008 Morning all, as you might of guessed a new WH has joined the ever expanding fleet First of all, a very big thank you to my Wife Mandy for not only driving me about on a 187 mile trip to pick up the 314, but also for putting up with my WH ways Let the photo's begin A couple of snaps of Betsie (the pick-up) taken the next day. It was too late, too dark and we were too tired to unload that night.. Oh It was Friday night by the way While on the subject of Betsie, she did us proud that day No break downs and she managed to cover 187 miles on
Stigian 1,234 #2 Posted May 6, 2008 On the way back from picking up the 314-8, my Wife and i dropped in at Jim's place to pick up some more WH goodies A set of grass tires of the correct size A pair of rear lights This strange looking is a PTO powered winch that Jim built for his 312-8 befroe the front loaded went on it. While at Jim's he was kind enough to let me have a play on this beast After a good nose at it and a play i have to say that this machine is a work of art and hats off to you Jim for building it Even my wife was impressed
BairleaFarm 340 #3 Posted May 6, 2008 Cool pics He has a back hoe attachment for his horse? pretty cool
Nick 13 #4 Posted May 6, 2008 Nice looking haul there Ian. Im no expert but the muffler looks right to me. You lucky dog playin with the WH backhoe. Still wish we had those small Ford diesel trucks here. We might finally get a new smaller diesel pickup from Ford in the 2010 model.
perry 82 #5 Posted May 6, 2008 congrats on the 314 find . great pics, jims backhoe is pretty sweet lookin :WRS:
DMESS 24 #6 Posted May 6, 2008 Ian the muffler AND tires are pretty much standard issue Wheel horse stuff. Now here in the states that particular tire size would be most common on a 308-8 or 310-8. Here in the states the 314-8 "maroon stripe" was only a 1985 model. Chances are it would be the same across the pond. Looks like a pretty solid foundation for your 4X4 project. Yeah, why the heck can't this country get a clue about small efficient diesels. I'm a Ford man and I had one option for diesel power which means I have an 8,000 semi when I really only need a 5,000 lb (or less) pickup.
Stigian 1,234 #7 Posted May 6, 2008 Cheers for all the great comments guys A quick question for you chaps. Ive just bolted the K321s engine in my Raider, but im a bit stuck on working out the wires The wire that came from the back of the raider engine plugged into that finned box under the dash. Where/how should i wire the same wires that are on the K321s engine they wont plug into the . If anyone could help with a quick answer to that it would be great. id like to get the Raider running with its new engine today :D
linen beige 15 #8 Posted May 6, 2008 Yeah, why the heck can't this country get a clue about small efficient diesels. I'm a Ford man and I had one option for diesel power which means I have an 8,000 semi when I really only need a 5,000 lb (or less) pickup. At the risk of getting a little too far The EPA mandates of low emissions have kept us from having them. By the time you wring the pollution out of them you've choked all the power. Now fuel prices are getting so that instead of choking on fumes from efficient engines, we're choking on the cost of fuel. Look at Germany for instance, They along with most other european nations have started to regulate emissions more stringently, but you can still get a full sized deisel Mercedes that will run well over 150 mph and get well over 30 mpg, for a price comparable to what a Mercury Grand Marquis costs here! But if you want to import one of those models into the U.S. you have to make the needed modifications to make it meet EPA standards. That more than doubles the price of the car and cuts the power and milage to less than half. i don't know how it is working out but the French take a more direct approach to cleaning the air. they don't focus so much on the machinery causing the pollution, they have air scrubbers in place in the more highly polluted areas. WheelHorse_of_course 99 #9 Posted May 6, 2008 Ian, If the finned 's have different plugs you will need to move it with the engine. These thingies are the voltage regulator as well as the rectifier. The one with three tabs in a single row are for lower amperages whereas the ones with one tab on the lower row and 2 tabs on the top row are higher amps (I could look it up). There should be 2 wires from the engine. This is AC from the stator. On the low amp unit these go to the outer pins. The center pin is your DC charging output. This gets connected to the battery via the ignitiion switch. DON'T run the engine with the center pin disconnected - the will over heat and then become a ! The rectifier :thingy:s get bolted to the dashboard or somewhere else and is should be easy to move over form one frame to the other. Good luck
Stigian 1,234 #10 Posted May 6, 2008 cheers for the fast reply HHmmm it loks like someone has removed the and replaced it with a fuse box I cant help but notice the extra earth wires to the chassis as well Me thinks someone has been playing with the electrics a bit Any surgestions on what to do now? I sure cant find a regulator anywhere :dunno:
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #11 Posted May 6, 2008 It's possible that the engine on the 314 has the 3 amp non-regulated charging system. (one of Kohler / WH's not-so-good ideas. ) Use this wiring schematic to help you sort it out: The operation of this system is like a Briggs & Stratton engine on many riding mowers. One wire with a diode "trickle charges" the battery the entire time the engine is running. The second lead is used to power the headlights - which get brighter as the RPM's increase. By the way - you can't always go by the arrangement of the terminals on a rectifier / regulator to determine the amperage. The newer 15 amp units have all three terminals in a row - which used to denote a 10 amp R/R. The terminals on a R/R are marked for proper wire placement. There are two "A.C." terminals and one "B+" terminal. They aren't always in the same position. "Look before you hook!" :D
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #12 Posted May 6, 2008 Another possibility is that the rectifier thingy is mounted on the blower housing. Not sure how often this is the case, but it is shown in the engine manual as a possibility.
Mith 2 #13 Posted May 6, 2008 Ian, great to meet you and Mandy. Say thanks for Mandy for her kind comments, its nice to meet a lady so positive about our hobby. Glad you made it home OK
Rollerman 290 #14 Posted May 7, 2008 Ian nice find & very cool you got to spend some time at Jim's! Extra cool he let you play on the infamous backhoe/loader Wheel Horse. Looks like Dustin has you covered on the odd tires & TT gave you a heads up on the "weird" wireing.
Banjo 0 #15 Posted May 7, 2008 You have the identical muffler that I have on my 85' 310-8 and it's nice and quiet on that great engine you have there too!
Stigian 1,234 #16 Posted May 7, 2008 Ian, great to meet you and Mandy. Say thanks for Mandy for her kind comments, its nice to meet a lady so positive about our hobby. Glad you made it home OK Cheers Jim Yeah Mandy is a great girl We did make it home ok, just a bit later than we had hoped. We ended up sitting on the motorway for almost 2 hours due to a 3 car pile-up. I think next time we will take a different route home Thanks for the wiring diagram Terry, i should be able to sort out the electrical gremlins with its help Is this little siver-ish box a rectifier thingy? This is on the 312. If it is, the rectifier thingy on the 314 looks like this. While im logged into photobucket, here's a couple more photo's for you all to dribble at The 314's engine looks at home in the raiders engine bay Think i might have to change the muffer though

Both of your tractors should have the dual-circuit alternator. (3 amp non-regulated with diode for recharging the battery and a separate 70 amp lighting "coil") Use the schematic I posted and wire the Raider up to match it. The only other choice you have would be to pull the flywheels and exchange stators. (make sure the magnets on the back of the flywheel are the same. Change the flywheel too, if you have to.)
