Wheel Horse Fan 3 #26 Posted December 28, 2010 C-Series...Auto for mowing, 8-Speed for everything else. Agree 100%. Never had an auto until late summer and I really enjoy using the auto. The 8-speed is probably better all-around and if you can only have one it should be an 8-speed.
Brrly1 1,146 #27 Posted December 28, 2010 Kind of goes without saying. I like my GT14's. I had a 520h that I wished I wouldn't have sold but I will find another. Also had a great D200 that was a pretty awesome tractor but the GT14's seem to hang around. See Ya, Bye Burly :ychain:
W9JAB 156 #28 Posted December 28, 2010 Gotta be the 856, use it all year round!I also like my 856, I believe it was the high point in the Wheel Horse line, as far as mechanical simplicity.
wheelhorse656 20 #29 Posted December 28, 2010 my opion would be a c series black hood or the 520-h! good luck! :ychain:
Tim 97 #30 Posted December 29, 2010 c-series C141 Auto with hydrolift Snow plowing- can change direction faster snowblowing- hydro lift mowing- if you have to back up alot) C 160 8 speed is better for tilling, better speed control 314-8 backup mower plow in winter (C141 has snowthrower) just my opinion..... rob65 0 #31 Posted December 30, 2010 The reason I asked is that I'm planning on using my 1975 D-180. The motor really runs strong, no smoke. I'm concearned with working the old hydro. Not to mention a good looking 416 is so much cheaper. :ychain:

Not to mention a good looking 416 is so much cheaper. D's kinda have a unique following. Not many people are going to say they are the best tractors to work with. There stout, built like a tank, & can handle some larger implements. The downside is there bulky, awkward to use & have pretty much the same transaxle design as all the other Horses.....just under more stress with the added bulk of the D. That said I love mine & enjoy tooling around with it. :D
rob65 0 #33 Posted December 30, 2010 I'm waiting for the tire chains I ordered to come in. They should be here today or tomorrow. I'm ready to go after that, except for a plow angle leaver. I'll let you know how I make out.
rwilson 128 #34 Posted December 30, 2010 My opinion is the 70's C series. the C-120-8 I have is an animal. I guess it is all in what you prefer.

In spite of that I love mine and tooling with it too! My vote for best working daily is a 1970's C- series. Hydro vs. 8 speed is preference, both have pro's and con's. rob65 0 #37 Posted December 31, 2010 The chains came in this afternoon. This thing plows like a beast. I rammed through everything.. then ran it out of gas. I took a picture. I'll try and post it later. Definately a tank. Think wheel weights are worth it? I weigh about 250. I lost traction a couple times in the deep stuff. I need new rubber on the back. How do chains work over the ag. tires. (i know this is a frequently debated topic, sorry) :ychain:
Wheel Horse Fan 3 #38 Posted December 31, 2010 How do chains work over the ag. tires. (i know this is a frequently debated topic, sorry) I have used both AGs and turfs with rubber chains and I think the chains have a slight advantage in typical snow conditions, but if ice is involved, chains win hands down. buckrancher 2,694 #39 Posted December 31, 2010 I like the 314-8 or 314H I have both and they have the 8" front rims (TT) I do like the Hydro for mowing but the gear drive works great for general yard work not quite the power of the 16hp but more than the 12hp (perfect balance) Brian
AMC RULES 37,196 #41 Posted January 1, 2011 520-H, hands down best performer.
Suburban 550 28 #42 Posted January 1, 2011 My opinion is the 70's C series. the C-120-8 I have is an animal. I guess it is all in what you prefer. I have to agree. My C-121 8 speed is virtually unstoppable when it comes to plowing snow. That tractor owes me nothin' for how long I own it and hard I use it. :ychain:
420lse 18 #43 Posted January 1, 2011 D-250 for tilling C-145 for throwing snow 655 for plowing My favorite is the C-145 I think.
bitten 134 #44 Posted January 2, 2011 If I had to pick just one of mine I would go with the D200. I dont mow with a . But other then using the mold board plow(8 speeds rule here) and the shipper shredder the D does everything I need it to do. Cant beat it for pushing snow/dirt, pulling yard roller and tilling. With the 3 point it gives you all kinds of options of things you can do. I have made a pallet mover that goes on the 3 point and that is very handy for moving things around with. Moving trailers is a snap with the 3 point. The 3 point cultivator is really nice but I have never used any other to know any different. My 310-8 does have its place and if I had a 3 point for the GT14 Im sure that it would go way up on the list. I do lots of things with the and have many attachments ( always wanting more) and need the different tractors for different things. Maybe the C-195 could operate everything but not having one I do not know.
smoreau 658 #45 Posted January 2, 2011 :ychain: I love them all but if I had to pick one would be my 417A at this time. when the resto of the 875 is done then I will put the 3 project tractors to gether and thay will each have there special purpose. :D
dave24 18 #46 Posted January 5, 2011 i really like the late 60's hydro's with kohlers. they last forever and are pretty sharp to :banghead:
wheel horse man 56 #47 Posted January 5, 2011 in my opinon its the commando 8 that thing is a best i use it for every thang from powing , disc, cultivating, using it to pull a 5x8 trailer with wood, to using it to pull bushes, and using the rear grader blade and it does these task with no problem and you cant beat the 8 hp kohler
VCW39 0 #48 Posted February 17, 2011 My 1974 B100 Automatic is the only one I Have owned and it has served me well for all these years with very little maintenance. It is still running on the same rubber it came with and all I have had to replace is the battery, mower blades, and spindles. I did install the hydraulic lift which made working with it easier. Have used it to push dirt, gravel, snow, till with the 36" tiller, and cut about an acre of grass every week during the summer. Do wish I had purchased a C 120 Auto that was for sale a long time ago. dgjks6 8 #49 Posted February 17, 2011 I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned before, but... 312-8. Enough power but not too much. Lots of parts and attachments. Easy to work on, AND the most important - RELIABLE
JC 1965 1,532 #50 Posted February 17, 2011 I guess it depends on the job you're wanting to do but I like the " 70's C series in general. Like someone said it's easy to find parts for them , they're hard workers and pretty easy to work on. But, just remember if it's a Wheel Horse you can't go wrong, no matter what model it is.
