CTPATRIOT 12 #2 Posted December 27, 2010 "70's C series with an 8 speed.Simple, reliable and easy to get parts/attachments for. Also a great looker .Just my opinion.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #3 Posted December 27, 2010 I've had quite a few different Wheel Horses here and I honestly have to say the 416-H has been the best all-around model so far. Mine is a 1990, but any year is good. The gear drives are way too slow for mowing an obstacle-laden yard, and nothing beats the hydraulic lift for snow removal duties. If I ever get the foot control kit installed for the hydro, it will be the 100% perfect tractor. They can be "lookers" too - especially if you change the cheesy little 6" front wheel to 8" like the later models: ^ brochure photo
Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted December 27, 2010 I have come to like my 520H, even if it drinks gas, I like the 90 up models with gear reduction steering, forward swept axle, large rear tires, and a MUST have is the dash mounted hydro and lift controls, but I know most 520's command a higher price, but before that I liked my late 70's C series the ones that have the gas tank under the seat, they hold more gas, and about every attachment will fit them, but I know the same goes for most all the newer tractors. Gene_S 93 #5 Posted December 27, 2010 My best worker is my 416-8, the wife uses this one. I use old and trusty 10-8 and she does a great job too.
Shuboxlover 481 #6 Posted December 27, 2010 Just as the guys said before me.... I really like my 76' C-160 Auto, but also love my 91 520-H I wouldn't be caught without EITHER of them.... :D
Docwheelhorse 2,740 #7 Posted December 27, 2010 16-8, C160-8, C161-8, C165-8 these are my pics for ---BEST--- but I would have to say any year 8 speed with the Kohler one lunger 16. That is the ultimate easy to work on tough as nails combo... I left the 416 out of the best category because I have always thought that the dash towers on the 3,4 and 500 series tractors left something to be desired compared to the cast alluminum ones... TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #8 Posted December 27, 2010 16-8 I'd like to have one of those too. :ychain:
Don1977 605 #9 Posted December 27, 2010 I have to say my C-120/180 because that's all I have.
HorseFixer 2,013 #10 Posted December 27, 2010 I dont work any except in the winter but from what I have seen read the C series is pretty economical to purchase, maintain, and is easy on fuel with the single lungers! :ychain:
Redbirdman 7 #11 Posted December 27, 2010 What model/year Wheel horse tractor do you feel makes the best daily worker? The BEST worker?........The RJ58 hands down! At least in 1958 it was! Come-on people, do you know what a pleasure it was to ride around and mow the lawn? Compared to pushing a reel mower! the wife uses this oneand the wife won't even go near it! yipee! How can you compare "the best" without fitting it into a specific time line? My neighbor has some silly orange and black dopey tractor with GPS!, Sirrius radio and air conditioning.............he calls it the 'Best'........ well anyhow, except for burning the rest of the hair off my leg my vote is still the little RJ..... 'cept maybe that 701 is kinda nice with that engine way out front there. ED....... :hide:
jusjeepn 59 #12 Posted December 27, 2010 My opinion is just that but I like my Electro 12's! Sundstrand hydro's are super strong and have infinitely variable speeds, hydraulic lifts and the ever popular electric clutch's. The 12hp Kohler's have excellent power and they don't use a ton of fuel. A mighty engine in a small package! I still like my 91 520H for its ride, steering and power but it really gets thirsty when worked hard.

WH nut 553 #14 Posted December 27, 2010 I probably use my 310-8 the mosts, but I sure love my
nylyon-(Admin) 7,948 #15 Posted December 27, 2010 For me it would have to be the 1994 416-H. I love the power and smoothness of the Onan 16, fuel consumption is fine and the hydro works so nicely. I like the C series too, but the 416 is far more comfortable.
mavfreak 11 #16 Posted December 27, 2010 78 C161 twin does everything I ask 72 commando 800 cart duty
IthacaJeff 151 #17 Posted December 27, 2010 My 416-8 with the Kohler K341 is my mowing beast, but when it comes to real work, the 310-8 is my choice. It pushes snow, grades the driveway, pulls overloaded carts, pulls the moldboard, does everything I ask of it while using about 50% less gas. I'm trying to "preserve" the 416 by using the 310, so I may see if the 310 can run the 48" deck or run the tiller. Jeff in Enfield NY

wheelhorsec85 5 #19 Posted December 27, 2010 Hard to beat a C160-8 speed!!! no doubt . the 160-8 speed . hands down . for tough ,get it all done, easy to work on , and as far as attachments !!! the sky is the limit . nuff said.
qd-16 14 #20 Posted December 27, 2010 Gotta be the 856, use it all year round!

Ken B 3,189 #22 Posted December 27, 2010 I'm with TT. I prefer a hydro for every day duties around the yard and snow clearing in the winter. With an 8 speed I always find that second gear is too slow and third gear is too fast.
can whlvr 994 #23 Posted December 28, 2010 ok i know im gonna stir the pot here but you asked, first of all i have and really like my kohlers, the k series and magnums, but my most reliable and simple machine is my 308-8 with a 13hp pull start honda,it allways starts even when left out in the elements bare naked, first pull every time and she has tonnes of power,it revs a little faster so ground speed is faster. C-Series14 15 #24 Posted December 28, 2010 C-Series...Auto for mowing, 8-Speed for everything else.
Rollerman 290 #25 Posted December 28, 2010 My favorite workers have always been the 300/400 series. Picked up a 417-8 with the electric lift last year & was reall cautious about the Kohler twin...it's really been a nice tractor & a smooth runner. Of all the machines I've mowed/plowed with it has to be about my favorite
