Everyday Ebay sends me an email showing Kohler parts from stripped motors. I am OK with sheet metal and flywheels, but does anyone think its wise to buy blocks, cranks, pistons, and other wear parts? I am thinking that the reason the motor was stripped is that one or more of those parts went bad.

I have mixed feeling about this. I think it depends why the tractor was parted out. I think there are a lot of people out there who have running tractors and just realize they can get more for parts than the whole. Ot they just decided to upgrade the motor. Or the motor blew. This is what goes throughmy mind every time I see parts on ebay.

I am not an engine expert, but I would buy a block or crank on ebay - but I would plan to put some money in them getting bored, honed, and turned. A piston - probably not - unless the price was right, then you could measure it and check.

Its a risk, you could have wasted money - but it can be cheaper than new.

Only if you can pick up the parts in person have the tools to measure and refuse part that are too far out of spec.

The track record of the seller goes a long way with me.

A friend of mine sold a bostitch air stapler for me on there, and although there were others that seemed to be in about identical condition, mine sold for 75.00 more than their "buy it now" price.

He's been selling for about 10 years, has a 100% satisfaction rate and 80+ pages of positive comments.

I agree with Stone man a seller's reputation goes along way with me. And I always check them out, before even thinking about bidding on an item..Most things I,ve bought have been good. But there have been a few bad also!!!

Ditto's on feedback. I have never been disappointed by purchases from folks with good feedback. I bought my C-112 on Ebay. The seller couldn't do enough to make the sale a positive one. He's a Red Square member too. With a barn load of tractors. Including one signed by Cecil!

Even so unless the seller is a mechanic with great feedback buying engine internal parts is risky. I suspect that most sellers are well meaning and will guarantee the part. But it is a lot of wasted time and effort if the parts are unusable. Besides for a little more than $100.00 you can buy one of those Chinese rebuild kits on Ebay. They have a pretty good reputation so why would you buy a piston and rod of unknown quality for $50.00?

:hide: There are a few sellers on EBAY that buy used tractors and part the tractor completely. I have heard where these guys will travel a 200 mile radius of their home base to buy these old tractors, haul them back to home base and part them out and sell on EBAY etc. I noticed that one seller in particular has started posting pictures of the complete tractor in the EBAY auction and some of these look to be in pretty darn good condition. Its amazing to me, that there are those of us that love these old tractors and want to own and restore them and there are others who are gobbling them up fast and parting them out for the almighty buck! :ychain::D :D

But most of those tractors were on ebay or CL, and everyone had a chance to buy them, also with out people like that where would you get nice parts to rebuild your tractors?? I part lots of tractors, I don't part nice units, but I part rebuildable ones all the time, you can't save them all, and shipping a tractor is not cost effective, but you can ship parts easy, and a $300 tractor in pieces is worth much more, because you can ship the parts, if they were not parted, we would have a bunch of broken tractors with no parts to fix them, and old used up tractors don't have most of the time usable wear parts that everyone needs, think of that next time you need a 40 year old part.

I agree with Kelly, its not like there is still shelves of new parts at the dealer for our Wheel Horses, not anymore. We have to rely on these very same used parts to fix ours up.Its not like they are going to the scrap yard to be melted down and turned into fence posts or re bar. They are being used to repair and or restore tractors that in many cases would or could easily end up being scrapped, ripped to shreds and sent over seas if they had not ended up in the hands of someone that was attached to these great tractors that was bound and determined to return them to their former glory . I too would cringe to see really nice or unmolested tractors parted out. When we need a nice hood, trans or whatever, we all want the parts to be as nice as possible. When the parts look nice chances are the rest of the donor tractor looks pretty good too. At times it can be a double edged sword .In the end like Kelly said, the tractors were available to everyone.

Someone had already bought them all!! :ychain:

I actually did pick up a choke cable there, and decided that the throttle cable that was on that tractor was OK. But then I got my dash decal from Vinylguy and it looks too good to go with the ratty old throttle cable....

At the prices that Brian is quoting though, I have no excuses for giving some love to a couple more in my stable.
