Anthony Wendover 124 #1 Posted May 2, 2008 First off id like to introduce myself The name is Anthony and iv had a thing for wheel horse for quite a long time. Id love to post my wheel horse story at a later time but right now I just got my own wheel horse and have some questions about it. I got a 1993 312-8 what I was wondering is can I use different tires and rims from say a 1984 horse? I hate the small front rims on it and think it would look better with the bigger front rims like my 84 work horse. Also with a different set of tires work? More like the 1984 tires I think they look better than the more rounded tires on the 93. Also for the exhaust I like the chromish exhaust on the 520s. I was wondering if that would work on my 312-8? Thats all the questions I can think of at this time.
nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #2 Posted May 2, 2008 Anthony, welcome to RedSquare. First, are you talking about the size of the tire or the type of tire? To my knowledge the 1993 models came with TurfTrac R/S tires (which are my favorite). You can switch them to Turf Trac tires without any issue. I am not sure what size tires you have on your 312 are they 16x6.50? That is the right size. Again
CasualObserver 3,411 #3 Posted May 2, 2008 Hey Anthony, I just wanted to say . I don't know the specifics about your wheel question, but I know there has been discussion of this in the past. I'm sure some of the others who have dealt with that will answer. I think your tractor has the smaller rims for a mower deck clearance problem... but like I said... I'm not sure. But and and your story when you get time!
Curmudgeon 28 #4 Posted May 2, 2008 In reply to the muffler question. Your 312-8 is a Kohler single, the 520's have an Onan twin. Entirely different exhaust systems. It's possible all you're looking at is the heat shield, which might work, might have to drill some holes though. I'm sure it's an expensive part just to experiment on. Jim_M 179 #5 Posted May 2, 2008 The heat shield for the 520 is available from Toro. It's around $100.00 if I remember correctly. You can put 8" rims on the front of your tractor, but you may have some clearance problems with your mower deck. Your 1984 rims should go right on.
Nick 13 #6 Posted May 2, 2008 I dont have much of a memory but wasnt the 37" side discharge the only deck that had a clearance problem? Guess one of the experts will know.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,169 #7 Posted May 3, 2008 Yep, yer right Nick. The smaller tires were for clearance on the 37"SD. Mike...........
Anthony Wendover 124 #8 Posted May 3, 2008 Thanks guys this is great news. Below is 3 pictures showing the tires I like better on the grey work horses. Now my tractor is the last one.. As you can see mine has the more rounded look to the tire while the older work horse has a thicker tread and taller side wall more squared off then rounded.. if those work ill grab myself some new tires. Also does anyone know the silver paint code for the rims? The work horse has white ones and they wont match the rears. Thanks so much you guys are very very helpful
