CasualObserver 3,411 #1 Posted May 2, 2008 Hey Stephen.... can we get an update? or are you holding out to show them off at THE SHOW?
Rollerman 290 #2 Posted May 2, 2008 Jason since I've been back to work I really haven't had the time to work on either of them.... As an added set back...the one I do have finshed was on jackstands with a sheet over it....& both rear tires must have swelled from the heat & ripped apart. I'm hopeing to pick up one set of new & a set of used at the Portland,IN show next week. I guess I need to push my other projects to the side & get busy on them huh? I'm hopeing for no more setbacks.
DMESS 24 #3 Posted May 2, 2008 Just bring the unfinished one to PA as a pile of parts, and I'll trade you an unfinished RS-83 pile of parts. Everybody wins! :D
CasualObserver 3,411 #4 Posted May 2, 2008 Sounds like lots of WH folks will be at that Portland show... I keep seeing it mentioned everywhere! The LeSeuer swap last weekend was a bust.... we had a total crap weekend... I didn't even go over there. It rained all day Thursday, rained off and on Friday, and snowed most of the day Saturday. (nothing that stuck, just made it annoying... the high for the day was only like 35) Hope you have a nice sunny weekend for yours!
Nick 13 #5 Posted May 2, 2008 Stephen, The local tire shop has been able to get me some fairly good deals on special order tires. If you want to give them a try they are Miller Brothers tire (419) 738-8424 http://www.millerbrostire.com I was just there today and always wonder around looking. If they can get you something I could haul them to Portland for you. Jason, The Portland IN swap meet is May 12-18. Most years people haul stuff in from all over the country. Might be interesting to see how gas prices effect them this year. This is a very large swap but the show Aug 20-24 is huge. The show also has a very big swap meet area. Both the swap meet and show have good turnouts of WH people.
Rollerman 290 #6 Posted May 2, 2008 Thanks Nick....I'll give them a call. I think I missed M.E.Millers pre order date for the Portland show. I'm not sure if there open saturday or not in Wasseun?
linen beige 15 #7 Posted May 3, 2008 Stephen, here's a possibility that I've seen happen with a lot of old car tires. Some of the late '30s/early '40s, particularly pick-ups, used sizes that are now hard to find, and restorers will try to clean up 50 year old tires and use them for shows. They clean EVERYTHING spotless and paint the rims, then remount the tires before the paint has had time to off gas (cure). The solvents in the fresh paint attack the insides of the tires and they disintegrate. I even know of a couple cases where the installation of new tubes, fresh out of the box with that awful smell, are suspected of doing the same thing. One of those cases was my dad's Ferguson TO 20. Just a thought. While I'm at it, Anybody else know that you can polish or remove paint from rubber, with a low pressure, siphon feed sandblaster? Plain old DRY lumber yard builders sand is not as rough as blast media and leaves an almost as good as new finish, provided the outer layer of rubber has not started to delaminate. You do need to clean the dust out of the sand first though. This can be done by using the blast gun to blow it into one end of a long peice of 6 inch PVC DWV pipe with a small fan gently blowing past the other end. The sand coming out the other end can be caught in a bucket, etc. and the dust is carried away with the breeze.
Rollerman 290 #8 Posted May 3, 2008 Jim these two tractors sat outside for who knows how long? An Oak tree had partially grown around one of the implements attached to the tractor even! So the tires sat flat forever & partially sunk in the ground. I thought I was lucky in that two still held air & looked good....it held air all winter. My only guess is that when we got are first 80 degree days a few weeks back (2 of them) the air expanded enough to rip the tires?
linen beige 15 #9 Posted May 3, 2008 Yep! I'd say yer right! I admit I hadn't really been following the thread on this closely. I just thought I'd seen where the rims had been painted, and knew you were working along pretty swift ( wish my wife would let me do that, I have to sneak a part here and a part there. ). It does look good.
