400 or 401

Recommended Posts

jcb857

I just picked up a tractor it has 400 suburban foot rest and the spec # on the k91 motor match up for a 60 400 surburban. Now the hood is a 61 401 hood. The serial # is 44641 is this tractor a 400 or a 401 I will try and get pics up this weekend. THANKS JEFF

Going by serial # with it in the 40,000 range would probably make it a 1961. That is comparing to my collection of serial #'s. Good luck! :ychain:

Probably or likely are the key words here. Remember that the hoods and footrests are interchangeable, so going strictly by them (especially when they don't match up) is only going to give you a best guess. It could be a 1960 model that needed a replacement hood in 1961 for some reason. It wouldn't have been the slotted replacement grill because that didn't start until 1962.

What's your clutch pedal look like? A cast iron pedal, or a 90 degree bent piece of flat stock? Where is your serial number? On the frame on a decal, or on the tag on the hood? If a tag, is it the top square cut off, or the whole long tag?

Your serial number is most likely a 401. The first 401 was #42646. However, if it's on a tag on the hood.... it could have come with the hood.

Check the casting number on the trans. Still not a definite answer but it is not as prone to have been replaced in the past. And if the trans and engine both come out to be 60 model then you will have to decide for yourself what has been replaced where.

the spec # on the k91 motor match up for a 60 400 surburban.

The 400 and 401 used the same spec number. Sounds like you have a 401.

k13-0

K=Month of the year(Skips letter I due to confusion with number 1

13=Day of month

0=year

Oct. 13 1960

Now thats a casting Date not a usage date sooooo how long did it take them to assemble trans and put it under a tractor :ychain: .If it happened quick its a 60 if not 61.

Sorry this isnt much help, But in my opinion with a 60 engine and footrest along with this date on trans I believe I would go 60 with a replacement hood

The transmission code probably is K 13 0

K=month of november

13 = november 13th

0 = 1960

with three month lag from casting to assembly that would make the tractor

built in feburary/march 1961 so it's reasonable to assume your tractor

is a 401 built in early 1961. (or at least the transmisson was)

Looks to be a 401 as it has the 401 hood stand among the other parts you mentioned (hood, t/c cables etc.) You have the 2nd variation LMR-30 with the correct mower belt guard as well (the same one used for the snowblower as well).

WOW never relized they skipped letter "I"

so that could put it at the end of dec. 1960 or jan. 1961

for the spec #s on the k91 i was going by the master list and it has diffrent spec #s for the 401 and a 400

Here's some Wheel Horse documentation of the same spec #s being used on both.

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=1012

Also, as EvanLoock pointed out, yours has the 401 hood stand. The small, rectangular opening where the engine cables go through it are not on the 400 hood stand.

Can you get us a pic of your serial number tag/decal?

Yep - Both of which are 1961 traits. :ychain:

Have any bigger pictures? I tried enlarging them, but still couldn't see. :D
