Shuboxlover 481 #1 Posted December 15, 2010 So I took this starter apart to clean and inspect it, and when I was putting back together....I dropped the dang thing My question is.....will it still be functional with part of that brush missing.... I have the piece that broke off, would it do any good to try and glue it back together
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted December 15, 2010 I'm going to say it might work but will not have any power to turn the engine, and no you can't glue it unless you have conductive glue.
wh79d160 52 #3 Posted December 15, 2010 I believe the broken part is the part that goes against the armature. I think NASA makes a special kind of high conductor glue that you could use. Know anybody @ Cape Canavrel? I think it's time for a new brush set. Throw it in a box & wait till spring. You got enough tractors ready to go. Take you ADD meds & finish the inside of that building. :ychain:
Don1977 605 #4 Posted December 15, 2010 From the looks of that other brush I think you need a new set anyway.
Trouty56 567 #5 Posted December 15, 2010 Maybe spend a couple bucks more and buy a complete one from the auction site or better yet a new after market starter. I've seen them for around 60 or so. The magnet is cracked and now you need brushes. Here is a starter for example for 44 before shipping. Maybe these aren't any good. Don't know but it is an alternative. Shuboxlover 481 #6 Posted December 15, 2010 Take you ADD meds & finish the inside of that building. Hey Hey Hey!!!!! I've gotten a little distracted lately..... I actually just pulled the electrical permit this morning.....although, it might already be wired Hopefully get it inspected next week.... start insulating the week after, and then the sheet rock.....hopefully by the middle of January it will be insulated, dry walled (not finished though), and all the lights and stuff up, then the plumbing.... wh79d160 52 #7 Posted December 16, 2010 I got a building permit. You need one for electrical? and water? I better leave my gate locked. :D
Shuboxlover 481 #8 Posted December 16, 2010 I even needed one to install a freaking exhaust fan in the bathroom of the shed!!!!!! :D
Horse'n Around 22 #9 Posted December 16, 2010 What engine is that starter for? I have a starter for a K181 that is weak, i think it would need a set of brushes, it was on the Frankenhorse that my Dad left me. If its the right one, I could remove the part you need and send it to you for the cost of the postage. Let me know if it will help you and its yours. I would hate to see you have to buy a whole starter because one part is broken.Heck, you can have the whole starter for postage if it will help you. Shuboxlover 481 #10 Posted December 16, 2010 WOW!!!! Thanks John It's off a K341AS (16HP Kohler) I got it started tonight, but with my starter off my D My plan tomorrow night is to put the "bad" starter on and see what happens.... I will DEFINITELY let you know what i find out. Thank-You :hide:
Scrumpy 5 #11 Posted December 31, 2010 Hey, I might be wrong but it is not the inside of the brush that hits the armature on these starters but the top of the brush. In this case the brush should still work although it may not stay "square" in the guide leading to accelerated wear. In the short run if needed it should get you through a storm but I would order a new set of brushes and call it good. Scrump edit for spelling error
Shuboxlover 481 #12 Posted January 10, 2011 For any of you who are wondering.....this did still work. JB welded magnet, broken brush.....you just can't keep them Kohlers down.... :banghead:
