Nick 13 #1 Posted May 1, 2008 Not being a mechanic I had to get some help from Dad on pulling the gears out of the rusty 401 and then getting them back in the right place but I got her back together for a test run. Put the transmission back on, broke the steering loose, mounted some different tires, found a seat pan then stuffed a 3.5hp briggs under the hood and away she went. I wanted to use my old 1.5hp Lauson but the exhaust came out the back on it so that might have given real meaning to Nut Roaster.

DMESS 24 #3 Posted May 1, 2008 Glad you swapped out that seat. I'd have wanted my tetanus shot up to date before climbing aboard that one! Good to see the ol' girl going again. Now how about that 4 HP Kohler?
Nick 13 #4 Posted May 1, 2008 Ive owned a few BB but never had one in runing condition. It is kind of fun to see something that was so rough a few days ago that is now moving under its own power. Dustin, I dont know about the old Kohler. It will turn over but not sure it will be worth the effort to get it going. Its not a restoration by any means so the briggs might even stay in it. I do have a 4hp Kohler with gear reduction that I assume could be removed then the crank swapped out so it could be used.
CasualObserver 3,411 #5 Posted May 1, 2008 Nick... yes your old gear reduction Kohler will work, but like you said, you'll have to swap the crank and probably the carb/aircleaner setup. (I'm guessing it probably has the old clear plastic oilbath setup) The output end of the crank in the GR is splined. Mike Williams just did the same thing on his RJ resto that he's working on right now.
