I know that many owners use 80/90W oil, but the owners manual calls for SAE 140 GL-5 gear oil. If you are operating in an extremely cold area, I'd use the SAE 85W-140 GL-5. Capacity is 2 qts.

The old Sears 6 speeds used 30W non detergent.I wonder how that would be in the WH rear ends?Esp. in winter!

The 1967 Lawn Ranger manual, as well as a few other tractors- called for 40W in the 3 speeds, but I have no idea why. I'd stay with the thicker stuff (85w or heavier), unless you're moving to Alaska or somewhere like it.
