TT-(Moderator) 1,158 #26 Posted December 12, 2010 I thought it would be nice to "archive" these pictures here. (this is the one, right Cas?)
formariz 11,995 #27 Posted December 12, 2010 That is the one. Nice but too much money for the potential headaches. On the other hand one could just use it with gasoline. It may just have an extra thick head gasket. I am not sure if any other modifications were done to it by the factory. formariz 11,995 #28 Posted December 12, 2010 I was reading about this system a little more and they also mention using distillates as a fuel, so on a "lighter" note perhaps I should reconsider it since I am somewhat of an expert at something else and certainly there would not be a shortage of fuel
TT-(Moderator) 1,158 #29 Posted December 12, 2010 One of my favorite The Dukes of Hazzard episodes was the one where they were having the "alternative fuel" contest. Word got out that Uncle Jesse was going to enter his "moonshine" so he could win the big $ prize. The law tore his car completely apart and couldn't find the 'shine anywhere...... 'cause it was in the gas tank! :ychain:
formariz 11,995 #30 Posted December 12, 2010 You can then call me Uncle Cas and most likely it will be in the RJ's tank.Everyone is invited in the next show to bring their own shot glasses and steal a little fuel from my tank.(Just make sure you take it from the right one). formariz 11,995 #31 Posted December 19, 2010 I am going to pursue this project so would a K91 need any modifications to run on "alcohol"? Would it be detrimental to it and what would the alcohol requirement have to be (such as proof).
TT-(Moderator) 1,158 #32 Posted December 19, 2010 Lots of info here, Cas: Running on Alcohol - link
Jim_M 179 #33 Posted December 19, 2010 Generally, to run an engine on alcohol you need larger carburetor jets and the timing should be advanced a few degrees. To run a K 91 on ethanol you'll need to be sure there is no rubber anywhere in the fuel system, that includes carb gaskets and the tip of the needle. You'll need to do some drilling on the carburetor and may need to add a small electric fuel pump if you're going to run it wide open for long periods. You'll also need to gap your points a little closer. You can make more horsepower on alcohol and it runs much cooler, but it also takes more fuel to run it. Don1977 604 #34 Posted December 21, 2010 We used to run methanol in our 5 HP Briggs Go Kart engines. We used Tillotson carburetors with double pumper vacuum fuel pumps. We would clean up the Intake & Exhaust areas add double valve springs install a solid cap on the valve cover with a connection to power the fuel pump. . Remove the governors add a solid cast alum. oil dipper, and straight exhaust. We raced on a track in a cow pasture so it was run what you brought. I made some brackets and lowered the coil and we ran 3 HP alum. flywheels I had an IC Briggs with ball bearings on each end of the crank. We installed a 90/1000 offset key, talk about some that would kick, it would almost jerk you shoulder, elbow, and wrist out of joint when it kicked back and leave you fingers numb for a while. I ran good and would wind up quick you could take you foot off the peddle and they would keep on getting it done, almost no back pressure to slow them down. We never told the others that came to race we were running the 3 HP Alum flywheels. One other group that we raced went out and bought a engine from a Go Kart engine builder though they had our daddy but it came out a dead heat.
