HorseFixer 2,013 #26 Posted December 11, 2010 Stamped steel pulley are junk no matter where they are made. You have the pulley fixed now the stamped steel idlers will go. I agree Don, I will replace all of those. But that morning was only half the story with the problems I faced that morning!! Back in the summer minutes before leaving to the Charlotte tractor show, I hit the Garage door button inside the garage to let the door down, walked underneath the door outside and CRASH the damn garage door springs broke down came the door and KER POW I just about chit myself After investigation I discovered what happened & I used a couple pair of vise grips and a bolt thru the track and secured the door until which time I would fix it with a new pair of springs when I got home (Which I Did). Fast Forward to the pulley incident this week. After that happened I said well better pull it into the garage and get ready for work not knowing about the Pulley thing yet. Well when I opened the garage door and backed the Snow Machine in the garage I then let the door down it came down about 1/4 way then went back up! WTF I thought..... After turning off the tractor I walked up to the door to see the cable come unwound on the spool on the door. <_< I thought chit what else could go wrong! MJ came out about that time and she saw the look in my eYes and yeah Ray yer right it Spelled S L U G G O. I gained my composure and figured enough was broke so thought I would leave well enough alone! I had her pull the rope to unlatch the door from the opener and I let it down "BOY THE DOOR IS HEAVY WITHOUT SPRINGS ATTACHED". I had a pal come over after work that works on garage doors and he said the springs prolly weren't tight enough and the cable came unwound. He told me the reason these springs break is because no one lubricates them!! What I said! Oil the springs and he said YEP every year, try to use a lubricant that doesn't attract dust is best but any lubricant is better than none. So ya see sometimes it doesn't pay to get up in the morning! Here is a link to a garage door maintenance site that mentions lubricating the springs. Garage Door Maintenance! Suburban 550 28 #28 Posted December 12, 2010 For all you who never got to meet Sluggo, he is the one who Duke calls on when things get rough to make some major adjustments. Here are some pictures of Sluggo and Miami Vice making some major adjustments to Dukes Blackberry when he wasn't receiving the calls he should have been. Do you see any resemblence to the busted pulley pics?
JoeMonag 1 #29 Posted December 12, 2010 Duke, I'm going to check al the pulleys on my two stage. I'm patiently waiting to get my K341 back from the rebuild shop, and get it on my 416-8, then I can set up the two stage. Duke I recall you installed some rubber flappers on the fan of you two stage, to allow you to throw snow and slush farther, Do you think this would put more strain on your drive pulley? The reason I ask is I was thinking of installing them on mine two stage. I have a 400" driveway and I would hate to have to a break down. Glad to see you you got the unit back together. Could you share the part # and brand of the kevlar belt you installed? I think I should have an extra belt. I have and extra engine to trans. belt that will fit my 310 and my 416 belt, learned a long time ago belts only break when you don't have a spare LOL Thanks for sharing your experiance with the group. Duff 206 #31 Posted December 12, 2010 In amongst all the good humor in this thread, just thought I'd chime in on the pulley thing. I had the main drive pulley at the bottom of the (vertical) engine that drives the mower on my JD235 (yes, I do have a green tractor, too, but it's at my Mom's house so it doesn't contaminate the red herd!) split on me. This was with less than 50 hours of mowing time on a year old, well maintained tractor. Sure enough, it was a cheap-o spot welded pressed steel POS. JD paid for a new one and to have it replaced, but not before it tore up the $65 drive belt for the deck. They wouldn't cover that. I'm not necessarily indicting JD for using cheap stuff, it just seems to be the way of the world lately. Duff :D
Operator 7 #32 Posted December 12, 2010 Over on MTF there is a JD guy [yyup I read their posts ] that showed the pulley that had a bearing freeze and stuck the belt took off half of the pulley! It was PLASTIC! That's worse than the staped ones. But I did say JD. Randy
