Nick 13 #1 Posted April 30, 2008 Got a call from my brother the other day saying he had someone wanting to sell a BB Wheel Horse but that is was real rusty. I assumed it couldnt be that bad so I told him to take it and Id be right over to get it. Now there might be worse tractors out there but this is the most rusty tractor Ive ever owned. The right front rim is gone to the point that even the center section only had about an inch of metal left. The seat pan looked ok until I pulled a small piece of seat cover that was left on the front and the front of the pan came off as dust with it. Even the engine shroud is rusted off. The hood looks fairly good surprisingly. Might have to start a rusty tractor award. Made a good test weight for the 3pt.

Nick 13 #5 Posted April 30, 2008 I forgot to mention the engine is locked but I like the vine he left that had grown up through it. The transmission is just now starting to roll a little. The shifter is still stuck solid. Have to decide if I'll part it out for the few good bits or try to get it going for the heck of it. I guess it might look intersting to get it going and maybe even leave the original "patina". Forgot to mention I paid $100 for it sight unseen. I would be hard pressed to assume any Suburban or RJ is worth less if its whole. Some a little more than others. :WRS:
sorekiwi 761 #6 Posted May 1, 2008 My "new" Lawn Ranger is definately a contendor in the rusty tractor contest... http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=2431
Nick 13 #7 Posted May 1, 2008 Got a good start pulling the 401 apart tonight so I have some more pictures of just how bad some parts on it are. I was surprised how easy the trans and engine came off. The engine will turn over but she sounds bad when it does. I think the deck pulley went away. After draining the water I also got some interior rust/dirt pictures from the transmission. Yep there is still teeth under that crud.
CasualObserver 3,411 #8 Posted May 1, 2008 Tranny looks like it needs a nice long bath in kerosene!
DMESS 24 #9 Posted May 1, 2008 You know, those seats are nice thick steel. To see one rusted apart like that tells me it spent a LONG time in the elements! I've seen the blower housings eaten away before but I never saw a seat like that.
FrankinWNY 12 #10 Posted May 4, 2008 Hey I have a rusty Suburban also......lol, Frank in WNY Attached Image
BairleaFarm 340 #11 Posted May 7, 2008 One thing ive noticed about these tractors are that the steel is thick enough they usually last forever regardless of the rust. Well for the most part anyways.
