The most common around me are the 702's and 854's. There are others around but

those are the most common

Seems like everyone has a 702...and with good reason...it is a great looking and running little tractor. :ychain:

Lawn Rangers :ychain:

Popular as they may have been, I can't find a single one for sale around here.

Built for 7 years with round hoods and all called "Lawn Ranger".

They have to be more common than any other RH model. :ychain:

Even I had four of the little buggers and I wasn't even trying. :D

Lawn Rangers :ychain:

Same thing I was thinking TT... Built as long as they were where as 702 was only one year... so on...

Before everyone gets picky, I know they all had their own individual model numbers for electric and recoil start versions every year they were produced - but "Lawn Ranger" is the most common name used to identify them all ~ and when someone says Lawn Ranger, you "pretty much" know what they're talking about.

Not to stir the pot, and not to make some very good people hate me like (Lane Ranger), but when I hear the words "Round Hood" I do not think of the Lawn Rangers with the small front tires. I know they are "Round Hoods"...but I just...

slap me and educate me...please.

Just seems that when I go to shows, the 702's are there and the lawn rangers are not as much...even though the production numbers show different. Could it be that the 702 is the most popular tractor....word games. :ychain:

No animals were hurt in this post. :D :D

BUT.........

You don't even have to say "round hood" when you mention 702 - since all 702's were round hoods and anyone that knows that, knows that. :D

Lawn Rangers came in round hood versions and square hood versions, so in all fairness and honesty, you almost have to say "round hood Lawn Ranger". :ychain:

TT...thanks for not slapping me and just giving me an education....again and again and again.... :ychain::hide: You really are special people. :D

So would it be fair to say that the 702 is the VW for the common folk? :D

Well when starting to read this post, the ranger was the first in my mind, then the 702 popped up, I would have to say as far as standard tire sized tractors it would be the 702

I have 7 rangers and two 702's

Maybe it's just me, but at the big Wheel Horse show, it seems like alot of 702's survived and still are plentiful. How many were ever produced, I don't know. :ychain: I do agree the Lawn Ranger was probably one of Wheel Horses best sellers and most common, since they were produced for quite a few years in the round hood version.

So that is why I never see any Lawn Rangers...Kelly has them all...and he brings his 702's to the show. :D:hide: Going to have to invite myself over to Kelly's this year just to see all the stuff. :ychain:

and I think Ray hit on the word that I have been looking for..."survival" :D

Where I am I've seen more rangers than any other round hood. I know where there is an 854, and can't think of anymore round hoods. Anything that sits out in the open up here becomes one with nature.....

Ok...now I have a question...Other than the 7HP vs 8HP engines on the 701/702 and the 854, what's the difference between these models? Is it just different year of production? Is there a difference in transmissions? What about tire/wheel sizes?

I'm quite happy with my 854, and considering what he does for me and what he's been through, I'd say this old guy has been a VERY good horse! If he wasn't my "little guy" in the herd, I'd call him Big Red!

Not sure of all the differences, but the 701 had several "one time only" parts on it, I'm guessing since it was the first front-engine, non-Ride Away Senior model produced by WH. The K161 engine used that year did not have compression release, so the starter/ generator used double v-belts. This meant the pulleys for the S/G and flywheel had two grooves, and the engine belt guard was twice as wide as all the later tractors that used the S/G setup. The 701 and 702 used the same style front axle and spindles, but I think that changed in 1963 to one more similar to what is still used on most all of the later tractors. Also, the 701 used a white plastic dash panel that was not used on any later models, and the rear fenders came to a sharper "point" at the back, and had different bracing. The center console also was not drilled to mount a guard or cover on the non-drive side of the frame. The 701 mower deck was completely different than any later models, The hood was the only one made without the classic "grooves" and the list goes on and on.

In short, I think it's safe to say there were many more differences between the 701 and later models than there were between any of the 1962-1964 model tractors.

Yes what Kevin said the 701 is kind of all by it's self, the 62 to 64 tractors share more things in common, but they too are not the same from year to year, they all had differences that tell you what year they are, now as for what model that is much harder if it is missing parts.

I know the general feel is that a RJ58-9 are hard to find but it seems like alot come up for sale aroud me. IMO I think out of the 22K or so produced about 21,999 are still around and up for grabs. Well subtract 3 because mine are not for sale. :ychain: To bad my wife keeps me from buying the rest of them.
