rustbucket 4 #1 Posted April 29, 2008 we got the engine to run off gas instead of either today and i went to turn the drive tow lever in but all it dose is spin is it supposed to do that and you turn it to a set position or do i need to look further into the tranny and possably a rebuild? nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #2 Posted April 29, 2008 That's what it does on my Electro as well. I'll let someone with a GT-14 chime in to say which way the valve needs to be. (I think long end forward parallel to the frame, but wait for a definite answer)
glenn27 71 #3 Posted April 30, 2008 Are you talking about the little 'tow-valve', it's called on the tranny left side case?? If-so --looking head on at it---turn clockwise (in) until seated to use...Turn CCW (out) all the way to let fluid by-pass..might have to spray some penetrating oil around it at first to free up....... I think is what you wanted to know.....
rustbucket 4 #4 Posted April 30, 2008 the lever is on the left side on the top of the tranny and all it dose is spin around and around i turned it some 20 times clockwise and it dosnt tighten down at all . the tractor is a 1969 GT-14 with the sunstrand rear. hopefully it is like the other hydro and just point the long end forward seeing as how mine has a long and short side to the T of the handle Jason
nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #5 Posted April 30, 2008 The 1968 Electro says to have the long part forward to drive, long part backwards to tow. Hopefully yours is similar to that, give it a shot with the long part forward to see if it's working.
Jim_M 179 #6 Posted April 30, 2008 Karl is right. The long end should point forward, parallel to the frame. At least that's the way it is on a 69 GT-14.
rustbucket 4 #7 Posted April 30, 2008 thank you all ill give it a try when i finish getting the engine all buttoned up and nice and clean then will see about gettin her to roll under her own power instead of being towed to into the open with a jacobson cheif 1000 Jason. nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #8 Posted April 30, 2008 Um.... You're not towing the GT right? Automatic / hydro's are hand push only shouldn't be towed.
rustbucket 4 #9 Posted April 30, 2008 i lift the rear off the ground onto a cart and then tow it only on its front axle the hydro never is rolled unless by hand.

refracman 167 #11 Posted May 1, 2008 Also the belt drive engagment lever has to in the engaged position (down). when in the up position the parking brake is engaged
kpinnc 14,652 #12 Posted May 1, 2008 I would also add that the Sundstrand manual advises NOT to run the engine with the tow valve open. It doesn't mention specifics about how it causes problems, it just says don't do it. Kevin
rustbucket 4 #13 Posted May 1, 2008  its a good thing i got all of ya here to help as this is my very first HORSE to restore and run all i ever had was an old ford jacobson and a jacobson cheif 1000. the GT-14 seems to be made for pullin and pushin as i seem to have read it took a 4 and a half foot plow blade and also can use the 3 point hitch. rustbucket 4 #14 Posted May 2, 2008 the drive lever itself with the parking break is up i am not going to drive the tractor till everything under the hood is fully buttoned up and set right other wise i may have to be haveing to reach up to hold a few bits and peices as i wired a toggel into the ignition system for the time being till i can replace the rusted seized ignition on the poor girl. refracman 167 #15 Posted May 2, 2008 Yup the GT14 is a true beast of a tractor.Dry weight , no attachments is around 800lbs. I've had a loader on mine for 5 or 6 yrs now. Best as I can guess moved bout 200tn of dirt/stone, (hmm just start doin the math whats 40 x 17 guess that a little more than 200 ) pulled logs out to the woods moved engines and who knows what else and it just keeps going. I have a drive line (motor, trans and hydro) I rebiult last yr figgerin something would give out soon but the dang thing just keeps goin :WRS:
