CTPATRIOT 12 #1 Posted December 5, 2010 Just wondering what a good running 701 is worth(ballpark)? The tractor was painted a few years ago and has been used just to pull a cart since then.Straight and clean not all beat up.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted December 5, 2010 Selling or buying? Have any pictures? Do you know if it's all original? Cheap paint job or good one?

JimD 3,347 #6 Posted December 5, 2010 I'll take a stab and say 4 to 5 hundred. It is a nice one!
CTPATRIOT 12 #7 Posted December 5, 2010 It is missing a choke cable as well.
HorseFixer 2,013 #8 Posted December 5, 2010 :D Well the paint job is half baked and is screwy IMHO! He painted the plastic dash and have funky white accents on the bolts shifter & stuff. on the 4th picture down look at the front seam in the hood whats that a crack? Or a funky weld job? Tires are funky. And it does have a missing cover and choke cable and those are not the right footrests!. Wonder how many more things are suspect? If the engine is good and there is no play in steering and mechanical damage I would say not over $300.00 and prolly more like $200.00 If there is anything else wrong the price goes down from there! ~Duke
CTPATRIOT 12 #9 Posted December 5, 2010 The guys said it runs/drives like new,he's asking $500-he's pretty firm.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #10 Posted December 5, 2010 Yeah - Very creative use of paint. I see quite a few things that are wrong - and the missing S/G belt guard could cost you a lot of money. I believe the front tires don't even match. $500, huh? Laugh in his face & walk away.

puddlejumper 67 #12 Posted December 5, 2010 Check to make sure correct 1 piece fuel tank and since rear tires are from later model horse transaxle could possibly be wrong for that year also. :dunno. Just some thoughts since it appears to be possibly a put together parts pile.
dandan111 31 #13 Posted December 5, 2010 Well its not rusty but I would agree with the other guys its a little half baked. Looks like the guy that cleaned it up just used the paint and decal he had left over from another project. Price wise,I would just offer what you feel good about, bet he will take less than $500. Try $3or $400. -Good luck- -does it come with a mower deck?
Edjfleming 0 #14 Posted December 5, 2010 $400.00 Tops
JimD 3,347 #15 Posted December 5, 2010 Well, it would seem that I need to develop a more refined eye. You guys are good. You catch the little details I seem to miss.
AMC RULES 37,196 #16 Posted December 5, 2010 WOW! So that's how it done? Rip him a new one, laugh in his face, and walk away. Now I get it. Just like the car hobby. :D
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #17 Posted December 5, 2010 WOW! So that's how it done? Rip him a new one, laugh in his face, and walk away. Now I get it. Just like the car hobby. No... I said laugh in his face & walk away. It's the potential buyer who'd be getting a new one ripped in this case. Sorry about your car hobby issues. Not sure why it was necessary to make that association here. :ychain:
AMC RULES 37,196 #18 Posted December 5, 2010 WOW! I've got no car hobby issues. Its just not my thing to tear someone else down to build myself up. Look at that tractor, it's obvious someone loved that little guy, maybe they could've used a little direction to keep him on track. Ripping into the guy and devaluing the worth of his effort because of a few minor mistakes just so you can weasle him down in price is just wrong in my book. Everyone here knows they'd like to have that tractor. Why is is so wrong to give him what it's worth. You know you want it.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #19 Posted December 5, 2010 You know you want it. I have one, It has nothing to do with someone's work either. It's called being realistic.
dandan111 31 #20 Posted December 5, 2010 I think we are all trying to figure out where this all went wrong!
puddlejumper 67 #21 Posted December 5, 2010 On another note. If the tractor has the original short skinny start/gen with the long mounting bolt running completely through bracket and engine has original correct LEGIBLE data plate I would give 100$ for them alone, That leaves the hood, belt gaurd, double pulleys for start gen which are unigue to that tractor, which to someone who needs them maybe onother 250$ transmission if original I believe is a one year model shared only with the 551 another hundred :dunno:were up to 450$ not counting tool box and fender assembly which are also unique to that tractor. Throw in a good running kohler,Gas tank steering wheel and assembly(lower end special to that tractor),Good rust free pan seat and whatever else usable on the tractor and a man willing to part it out could do allright if so inclined. Figuring in labor to do this still would be unwilling to go full 500 but close enough to do some negotiating
Kelly 1,033 #22 Posted December 5, 2010 Well it looks like a good start point, but the missing gen. belt cover WHEN you find one will set you back $100+ plus other parts,I bought a 701 COMPLETE with all the hard to find parts, had been repainted has new ag tires runs very good, metal all in good shape seat pan not broken and dash even in usable shape, I paid $400 for it but sold the deck for $100 it was wrong and I don't collect decks, if it was me offer $300-350 unless you want it bad, you don't have to point out all the bad to him just be aware of all the bad, I'm sure it is his baby, and if you cut him/his tractor down you probably will not end up with it, make a offer on paper with your name and phone no. leave it with him you never know you might own it someday. stevasaurus 23,281 #23 Posted December 5, 2010 There was a 701 for sale at the Penn show this year, not restored, I think totally original...guy wanted $350 for it...was at $400. While I was talking to him we walked next to where he was set up and that guy had the correct deck for that tractor (the one with the wheels inside the deck). The guy bought the deck for $25 and I helped him carry it back to set with the 701. The price went back up to $400. The tractor started easy and ran great. I almost bought it at the end of the show, but I happened to win the raffle tractor...so no room. I think he went home with that tractor...tells me , at the all Wheel Horse show...he wanted more then anyone was willing to pay...but I think he was in the ballpark at $300 to $400...with no issues like we are talking about here. :ychain:
buckrancher 2,694 #24 Posted December 5, 2010 The steering support post and fan gear are both wrong for a 701 with the other missing parts I wouldn't pay over $325.00 for it I have two nonrestored 701's both complete and original paid $150.00 for one (not running) and $275.00 for the other(running) Brian
