dgjks6 8 #1 Posted December 2, 2010 So between work, kids, and life I have had no time to work on my c 85 restoration laying in pieces in the garage. But I still occasionally look on ebay for parts. Not sure if I wanted to rebuild the k181 or get a bigger motor. I gave the trans with the 1 1/4 inch axles to a friend and rebuilt a trans from a 312-8. I also have 2 42 inch decks in pieces in the garage and a 48 inch deck in pieces. I have one of every deck except a 42inch read discharge deck. So I have been looking for a bigger motor (large single cylinder like a 14 or 16 hp kohler), a transmission with the 1 1/4 inch axles, and a 42 read discharge deck. I was willing to spend a couple hundred on each of those if they ever showed up on ebay. Then I come across this... http://cgi.ebay.com/Wheel-Horse-416-8-42-D...=item3362fc3810 It is less than 2 hours from my house and my wife and kids are going to Chicago this weekend to see Santa. So I bought it - price and distance were right. Now for the question. Do I tell my wife, or do I put in inthe garage and hope she doesn't notice. I know what the right answer is, but it may not be the easiest. And my goal is to rebuild the k181 this winter.

JimD 3,347 #5 Posted December 2, 2010 Greg, you have three choices here: 1) Do the right thing. 2)Put it in the garage and hope she doesn't notice. 3)Store it at my for house for a few months, we'll find a reason for you to come back, then tell her I gave it to you.

I vote for number 3...that's the ticket. :)
wallfish 18,154 #7 Posted December 2, 2010 Put yourself in her shoes. Do the right thing. If I put myself in my wifes shoes when I buy tractor parts then I would say "NICE SCORE HONEY" Too bad I'm not in her shoes and she is.
TerryJW 0 #8 Posted December 2, 2010 I still have three tractors hidden from my wife. Went down to (Suburban 550 Ray Bakers house to see the new 702 he just bought and took the wife along to meet him and his wife. Ray threw in a few good hints that I needed a new tractor for christmas to help compensate for one that I own. That way if she tells me I can get one for christmas it will help explain one of them. You got to do what you got to do

dgjks6 8 #11 Posted December 2, 2010 Merry Christmas Honey! I bought you a tractor. Not sure how that will play on christmas morning. I probably will do the right thing. Tell her I am the boss and I can buy what I want. Then pack my bags and move to a hotel. Which would not be bad, except there is no garage at the hotel for me to work on the tractors. By the way Jim - I saw you finished your c-85 before I did. Nice job. It looks good. As for storing at your house, I'll consider it if you restore it for me. HankB 16 #13 Posted December 2, 2010 SWMBO still has not found the one parked behind the garage. She does know that I gave the blade that came with it to our son for his birthday. -hank
KC9KAS 4,744 #14 Posted December 2, 2010 Wife was raising cane last week about some of my treasures, and wanted to know which ones I was planning on leaving outside for the winter while her motorcycle was in the garage. Then a fellow stopped by and told me about some stuff he had for sale, and the wife said, "If it ain't Wheel Horse, he don't need it"! Sounds like I can buy without too much trouble from her! Rollerman 290 #17 Posted December 2, 2010 Just drop the C 85 off here at my place on the way to Chicago to get your new Horse. When she gets home & see's the 416....maybe she won't notice. My wife can't really tell any of my tractors apart & I have enough this works to confuse her. Infact I just bought a new ATV....a red one & this seems to be throwing her off. Serious be upfront with your wife. It's a hobby & an addicting one. There are worse things you can spend your money on.
DMK855 15 #18 Posted December 2, 2010 I just bring em home and tuck them in between a couple that I already have...... Kinda like my wifes does in her closet...... I take any tags off of mine though!!!

Redbirdman 7 #20 Posted December 2, 2010 Do I tell my wife, or do I put in inthe garage and hope she doesn't notice THEY KNOW!!! BELIEVE ME, THEY KNOW............ <_< The 48 hour rule is actually the best because then you can say: "OH shoot I forgot to tell you"! She will now be mad at two things, one that you bought it and another that you 'pretended' to forget to tell her. But it waters down the buying part. Better yet bring it in the house and drip oil on the floor.......now you have a triple! Or, in addition, tell her you bought it from a very young woman whose husband left her and left these old tractor parts in the bedroom. You felt sorry for the woman and bought everything.......... Now your wife will completely forget about the tractor and you are home free...............or homeless hmmmm ,
chris11 184 #21 Posted December 2, 2010 Turn the whole thing around. Bring it home Leave it right out in the open. If she asks where did that come from. puddlejumper 67 #24 Posted December 2, 2010 Do I tell my wife, or do I put in inthe garage and hope she doesn't notice or burn it down WE KNOW!!! BELIEVE ME, WE KNOW. <_< The 48 hour rule is actually the best because then you can say: "OH shoot I forgot to tell you"! And she can say "That's okay hun, I forgot to tell you I bought this...(even more expensive) She will now be mad at two things, one that you bought it and another that you 'pretended' to forget to tell her, because if she'd have known sooner, she could've bought even more. But it waters down the buying part. Better yet bring it in the house and drip oil on the floor.......now you have a triple! Or, in addition, tell her you bought it from a very young woman whose husband left her and left these old tractor parts in the bedroom. You felt sorry for the woman and bought everything.......... Now your wife will completely forget about the tractor and you are home free, because she got the name of that husband that left all those dang wheelhorse parts with you and hooked up and lived happily ever after...WheelHorse free...Yippeeeee!!!! ...... JimD 3,347 #25 Posted December 2, 2010 What rearends came with 1 1/4" axles? I thought 1 1/8" were the biggest they came with. Greg went through a major fiasco with axles for his tractor. I'm sure he knows 1 1/8" were the largest diameter axles in a Wheel horse. Just a mental slip or a typo most likely.
