strausbo 2 #1 Posted November 30, 2010 Today, I realized that my K-301 has an aftermarket coil that is marked "Must be used with an external resistor". My '69 Charger 12 Automatic does not have an external resistor. Am I correct that this engine should have a coil with an internal resistor? I also noticed that I can turn the coil within its outer can. Is this a sign the coil is junk? The engine started running erratic (it would die then recover) on high speed throttle settings and would idle ok. I found my points in very bad shape, burned and with metal transferred at the contacts. This coil also has a tall tower (where the high tension lead plugs in). junkman 0 #2 Posted January 13, 2011 I'm no expert but, if you are having trouble with the ign. system and the coil rotates in its can. . . i'd chuck that coil in the scrap pile and get a different one. Just my thaugts. :banghead:
Anglo Traction 761 #3 Posted January 14, 2011 Yep, Junk it, Replace it with a Kohler brand ( even if it is 'Used'). Also get new Condenser (part #230722-S) and Points. With Plug and Points gaps(+timing) set correctly, it will be fine again.
DMK855 15 #4 Posted January 14, 2011 Ditto on the coil, but you could ALSO have a fuel issue!! Almost sounds like it could be starving for fuel!!!!!
Kelly 1,031 #5 Posted January 14, 2011 Fix one thing at a time, that way you know what you did, I'd start with the ign. replace the coil, points and cond.

I learned this with the race car!! Make changes one at a time and document the results for each change!! Best of luck!!
