PTO/engine problem

Recommended Posts

417A, Kohler KT17

When I engage the PTO the engine cuts out like shutting off the key. It does not do it until the lever is about all the way forward in the fully engaged position.

I discovered this when attaching the snow blower. It was fine last year. I only use it for snow blowing and grading.

I disconnected the linkage to the PTO clutch and it still does it. I did not think the clutch was doing it anyway because it is not like a load stall..as I said it is like shutting off the key.

Is there a safety switch involved somewhere because that is what it acts like.

My guess is its the safty switch for the pto. It should be in the dash behind the battery behind the PTO leaver. Or a safety switch somewhere on the tractor. Like the seat or clutch. Try those areas frist then we'll move on if its not it.

There is alot of people on here better at helping than I but at least you can get started on something.

Yes try jumping out the seat switch first.

Do the instrument panel lights still work ?

With the PTO engaged and running when you lift off the seat the engine will shut down.

As stated by others, check both the PTO safety switch and the seat switch. You can temporarily bypass them, but they are there for a reason, safety. Once you find the problem, fix it properly. Don't want to see any accident reports due to overridden safety switches.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Evidently the seat switch is already disabled because you can start the tractor with the seat up. The problem still exists with me in the seat

The brake/clutch switch works as it should and has to be be depressed to start the tractor.

I assume you jumper the PTO switch? I have run into some safety switches that have to be open to work.
