HankB 16 #1 Posted November 24, 2010 This sucks. The tractor was cranking and not starting so I figured it was as good a time as any to replace the plug. It struck me as odd that the size of the existing plug (socket) wasn't the same as the one I had just removed form the package. And when I pulled it out, I was disappointed to see that it was a plug for a head with a tapered seat. Then when I went to put the new plug in, it just turned and turned and turned... This is why: Last time it was a Tecumseh. I bought the kit to install a plug insert. I guess I'll get to use it again. This engine is a smoker anyway so I had planned to pull the head to the cylinder and piston head. So I have something else to do at the same time. -hank
rmaynard 14,934 #2 Posted November 24, 2010 Until just a couple of months ago, I had never used a Heli-coil before. I was surprised at how easy it was to do. I repaired my K181 head for the cost of the kit ($14.00), a head gasket, and a new plug. Bob
VinsRJ 721 #3 Posted November 25, 2010 You may want to take a look at Evil-Bay for a used head too

HankB 16 #5 Posted November 25, 2010 what horse power is it i might have a good head? K301 -> 12 hp. But first I'm going to have a go with a thread insert. I already have the kit and at worst, I waste the price of a head gasket. thanks, hank
